Visiting my mother's hometown in Laos: Making Khao Pun Hua Long and feeding almost the entire village, spent 40,000 kip

When it comes to a trip that excites me, mr.hotsia, and fills me with warmth, nothing compares to my mother's hometown in Laos. This time, I experienced a traditional lifestyle that remains truly simple and warm. This trip was not just about traveling but returning to family roots and deeply learning the villagers' way of life, something you can't find anywhere else.

Journey to a Small Village in Laos

I started my journey from Thailand crossing the border into Laos with excitement because this was a return to my mother's hometown, which is rarely revealed to others. The village I visited is a small community far from big cities, with no famous province or city name, but it is full of warmth and the simplicity of authentic Lao people.

The atmosphere here is clearly different from what you usually see at local markets or typical tourist spots. Especially if anyone has followedthe Kha Mu local market deep in the forest by the Mekong Riveror the Mekong River boat trip at Hongsa as I previously shared, you will understand that visiting this village is like experiencing real life untouched by embellishment.

Lifestyle and the Signature Dish “Khao Pun Hua Long” Handmade

What impressed me most after arriving at the village was making Khao Pun, or Lao-style rice noodles called “Khao Pun Hua Long,” by hand. The process here isn’t complicated but requires dedication and skill in kneading the dough and boiling the noodles just right. I helped my mother and villagers knead the dough while listening to daily life stories mixed with the laughter of children playing throughout the village.

The Khao Pun Hua Long here is soft and has a mellow flavor, with a fresh taste from handmade dough and local herbal side dishes, including a spicy homemade dipping sauce that made me feel like I was eating food full of love and care.

Feeding Almost the Entire Village’s Children with Simple Joys

Besides the food, what impressed me equally was seeing the children’s lifestyle in the village. They played freely without technology or expensive toys to distract them, using nature around them as a huge playground. I helped take care of the children as if I were a relative. It was a moment that made me feel like a child again.

The total cost for this trip, including food and supplies I had the chance to help with in the village, was about 40,000 kip (approximately 150 Thai baht) only. It was a price I felt was extremely worthwhile because I exchanged it for experiences and feelings that are hard to find anywhere else.

Lessons and Memories from a Unique Lao Village

This trip taught me, mr.hotsia, many things — family stories, a simple lifestyle, and the warmth of a community that still strongly preserves its identity, even in a world spinning faster every day.

If anyone is interested in experiencing this way of life, I recommend following my footsteps.Gathering to Eat with Lao People at Ban Tha Suangin Hongsa or try a Mekong River boat tripThe Adventure into the Deep Forest of the Mekong Riverthat I wrote about before will help you see another impressive side of Lao life.

Summary

This trip to my mother's hometown in Laos was not just traveling but a homecoming that allowed me to feel the sincerity of the people, a lifestyle that still holds traditional beauty, and learn that true happiness lies in being with loved ones and living simply. If you are ready to open your heart, try traveling with me, mr.hotsia, to experience this at least once. I guarantee it will become an unforgettable memory.
