Big fish in Laos: Huge U River Fish and an exciting boat trip experience by mr.hotsia
When talking about Laos, many people imagine its raw nature and enchanting local lifestyle. But for me, mr.hotsia, the unforgettable impression was the boat trip on theU Riverwhich offers both challenges and unique charm that’s hard to find anywhere else.
The upper part of the U River where I had the chance to travel is on the route from Had Sa to Muang Khua. Both riverbanks are lined with rocky cliffs and steep limestone mountains. In some areas, the river widens with sandy beaches where locals have small villages. This atmosphere makes you feel like stepping back in time to a world still largely untouched.
Along the boat trip, I saw locals bringinglarge fish from the U Riverto sell by the riverbank. Judging by their size, these are truly “Big fish in Laos,” not just stories. Seeing them made me feel the richness of nature and the genuine relationship between the locals and the river.
The challenge of boating on the U River is not just sightseeing but also navigating the boat carefully past underwater rocks at many points. Some stretches have narrow, fast-flowing water, requiring speed and precision to avoid grounding or hitting hidden rocks. However, the boat owner I met was very skilled, always reading the water surface and choosing the safest path, making me feel secure and fully enjoy the ride.
Especially at the big rapids where splashes reach the boat in a fun way. This is the charm of the U River that I highly recommend everyone try. Besides beautiful natural views, you get an exciting rafting experience full of thrills and laughter with friends or family.
If you love raw nature and want to experience the riverside lifestyle of U River locals, I recommend visiting the local market by the Mekong River in Muang Hongsa, not far from this route. This market is full of fresh river products and local dishes to taste to your heart’s content. You can read about my boat trip and travel experiences in Laos inBoat Trip in Laos 3: Catching Large Laotian Fish with Fishing Netswhich I have written before.
Also, if you are interested in authentic Laotian local food, I have an article recommendingLaotian Food by the Mekong Riverthat I tried at the riverside market, including fish curry and spicy Laotian papaya salad. Eating food with this atmosphere truly enriches the travel memories.
Travel and Tips for Tourists
For those interested in trying the U River boat trip like me, plan your time well because the journey from Had Sa to Muang Khua takes about 6 full hours. You will see exciting rapids and riverside communities that still live simply.
The boat I used was operated by highly skilled local villagers, which gave me confidence in safety even when passing narrow, rocky points. Imagine if there was no such expertise, the trip wouldn’t be as fun or safe.
Finally, I want to remind all travelers that the true joy of traveling in Laos is not just the destination but the journey itself—experiencing nature, lifestyle, and people here. Open your heart and fully enjoy these moments.
