Champasak, an ancient city full of charm in southern Laos
I, mr.hotsia, recently had the opportunity to travel toChampasaka quiet old town that amazingly still preserves the authentic charm of Laos. Champasak is not a large city nor a bustling tourist destination like Pakse or Vientiane, but what I felt was simplicity and the friendly lifestyle of the people here. It feels like time slows down in this town, allowing us to fully absorb the atmosphere.
Champasak is located in southern Laos and is an ancient city of historical significance. Before the new city was moved to Pakse, Champasak was once a center of culture and trade. One highlight I really liked was the main road along the Mekong River, where you can stroll for hundreds of meters. The morning atmosphere here is lively with energy. Mobile markets appear along the streets and small alleys. I saw vendors selling fresh fish by the roadside houses and monks going on their morning alms rounds. These are scenes that are hard to find elsewhere nowadays.
Independent Travel and Tourism in Champasak
Many may wonder if traveling to Champasak is convenient. I, mr.hotsia, must say that traveling toChampasak and Wat Phuis very easy. Whether by bus or self-driving, it is convenient. Importantly, no visa is required because Thai nationals can stay in Laos for 30 days with just a passport.
I had the chance to chat with locals in Champasak while playing badminton with them and sensed their concern about whether the new road nearing completion would change the lifestyle of villagers and tourists. Early tourism may be affected by large tour groups, but I believe in the long run, more people will travel independently—traveling, eating, and staying on their own as I, mr.hotsia, recommend. This is the best way to truly experience the Lao way of life.
Lifestyle and Morning Market in Champasak
I really enjoy walking around Champasak in the morning because besides seeing the mobile markets moving around, you also get to experience the simple daily routines of the locals, such as selling local food, cooking at home, and children preparing to go to school. Although this morning market is not a permanent market like we are used to, it is full of freshness and friendliness that is hard to find elsewhere.
If you want to know authentic Lao food, I have written about the food atmosphere and markets in Laos in other articles such asBoat Trip Laos 14: Delicious Forget-the-Sour Curry, Lao Girls Crushing Young Grass with Mekong River Fish Currywhich will give you a deeper overview of Lao eating habits, and Champasak is no different.
Houses and the Ancient Charm of Champasak
Walking along the streets of Champasak, you will see old but sturdy houses with their own charm. I, mr.hotsia, often admire the unique wooden houses and architecture blending Lao and French colonial styles. There is also a study to create a walking route from Champasak to Angkor Wat in Cambodia, which was historically an important route linking culture and trade. I think exploring this route in the future will be a very exciting experience.
Feelings and Atmosphere of Champasak from mr.hotsia's Perspective
For me, visiting Champasak is not just about seeing the city but experiencing a lifestyle that remains natural and authentic. Unlike tourist cities adapted to welcome large numbers of visitors, here you will meet Lao people who are not very accustomed to Thai tourists, making their friendliness feel genuine and deeper.
If you travel independently in Laos, I recommend stopping by Champasak before going to Pakse or Wat Phu to truly experience Lao city life. If you are interested in the raw riverside market atmosphere along the Mekong, I suggest reading the articleKha Mu local market, a hidden market deep in the forest by the Mekong River in Laoswhich contains details and photos that complete the Lao experience.
Summary
Champasak is a city suitable for those who are unhurried, love simplicity, and want to experience authentic Lao culture. Traveling and tourism here are easy and uncomplicated, and importantly, it offers opportunities to meet locals genuinely. Whether it is the lively morning market, old houses, or the peaceful road along the Mekong River, everything in Champasak made me, mr.hotsia, feel that this trip was truly worth every step.
