Gum Kan Kep Visits Great-Grandma Hongsa EP1: Bat Watching Luang Namtha
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I want to take everyone on a journey to a land that still holds the rawness and simplicity of rural life in Laos. This is the first episode of the series “Gum Kan Kep Visits Great-Grandma Hongsa,” where I had the chance to experience life along the Mekong River in Luang Namtha, a place I had never known until I visited.
This journey was not easy because Luang Namtha is not on the main tourist routes of Laos. Many may know only Vientiane or Luang Prabang, but for me, mr.hotsia, coming here was an unparalleled new experience. My trip began with a small boat ride from Hongsa to Luang Namtha, cruising through dense tropical forests and the vast Mekong River. Besides enjoying nature, I also witnessed the simple lifestyle of locals deeply connected to the river.
One highlight of the trip was “bat watching,” an activity locals in Luang Namtha do in the evening. I remember the evening light gradually dimming, darkness creeping in, and then a large flock of bats flying out of the cave to search for food. The atmosphere was both exciting and beautifully indescribable, as if nature was putting on a live show without a script.
Luang Namtha itself still has small local markets that gather food and natural ingredients. I, mr.hotsia, tried grilled chicken seasoned with authentic Lao spices, so fragrant and flavorful that I had to order another skewer. There was also a spicy Lao papaya salad that whetted the appetite very well, just like what I had tasted inHongsaindeed.
Talking with the locals here made it clear that although they live far from big cities, their lives are warm and tightly bonded. The great-grandma I visited shared stories of past lifestyles with a voice full of pride. I think this charm made this journey more special than any other.
When it comes to traveling in Laos, many may prefer familiar routes, but I, mr.hotsia, want to invite you to explore lesser-known paths like Luang Namtha. Besides experiencing true nature, you will also learn about the simple and profound way of life of local communities.
For those interested in experiencing the atmosphere like I did, I recommend watching the videoGum Kan Kep Visits Great-Grandma Hongsa EP1: Bat Watching Luang Namthawhere I present real stories and scenes from this trip. It not only gives a clear picture but also makes you feel like you are traveling together.
In the next episode of this series, I will take you to experience the culture and local food at a riverside market along the Mekong River, a market that still preserves rawness and nature. For those who enjoy deep, unpretentious travel full of impressive stories, don’t miss it.
