Gam Kan Kep Visits Great-Grandmother Hongsa EP5: Wild Owl, Rural Childhood Life in Laos
Hello, I am mr.hotsia, back to take everyone on another adventure in Laos. Now we have reached episode 5 of the series “Gam Kan Kep Visits Great-Grandmother Hongsa,” which dives deep into the rural childhood life in the countryside of Laos, where nature remains abundant and lifestyles are simple but filled with warmth and unique memories.
In this episode, I travel deep into the forests of rural Laos, a place rarely spoken about, where the atmosphere is no different fromcruising the Mekong Riveror the journeys I recorded in previous episodes. The peacefulness of nature and the sounds of wildlife best tell that life here truly harmonizes with nature.
At night, the calls of wild owls blend rhythmically with the wind rustling through the trees. I had the chance to listen carefully to these sounds while reflecting on the childhood of these rural children who grow up surrounded by nature, without phones or much technology to block their genuine connection with the natural world.
I met the great-grandmother of a family living simply in an old wooden house. She is the heart of the family, preserving the culture and old stories of the village well. I enjoyed chatting with her about the changing way of life, yet some things remain the same, such as traditional cooking, sticky rice farming, and natural food preservation methods.
The food here is simple but full of flavor, like grilled chicken marinated with authentic Laotian spices, served with spicy Laotian papaya salad and fragrant steamed sticky rice. It is a meal I have experienced inthe video Grilled Chicken, Laotian Papaya Salad, Sticky Rice, Ko Sametbut here it clearly has a more genuine rural taste.
Besides lifestyle and food, I also visited a small local market filled with fresh natural produce, including native vegetables and fruits, river fish caught that day, and everyday tools used by villagers. This market is like the heart of the community where everyone meets, talks, and warmly exchanges news. I recommend reading more about the local market inKha Mu local market deep in the forest by the Mekong Riverwhich I documented earlier.
One thing that impressed me equally was the freedom of the children here. They run in the fields, climb trees, fish in the canals, and have plenty of time for imagination, unlike city life often limited by mobile screens or scheduled activities. Seeing them live so close to nature made me appreciate the value of a simple life intimately connected with the natural world.
If you are interested in experiencing this lifestyle, I recommend planning a boat trip in Laos, as I wrote about in the episodeFishing with Large Fish Nets Deep in the Mekong Forestwhich will let you witness the true beauty of Laos’ nature and culture as I have experienced.
At the end of EP5, I want to leave you with this: traveling to the deep countryside of Laos is not just about sightseeing or enjoying delicious food. It is about understanding life, the relationship between people and nature, and learning to appreciate the simplicity that many may overlook. I, mr.hotsia, hope this article inspires everyone to dare to explore the wider world and discover the true meaning of travel in their own way.
