hotsia kids school break trip 6/26: Eating Xeno Grilled Chicken in the Lao Rice Barn

Hello, I am mr.hotsia with an extraordinary school break travel experience. This time, I took the kids to experience the true lifestyle and flavors of Laos on June 26th, a perfect time for families to create wonderful memories with nature and local dishes that are hard to find in Thailand.

Our destination is not in a big city or a famous province but a rural area in Laos that still preserves the rawness and simplicity of village life perfectly. This place has a unique charm that mr.hotsia wants everyone to open their hearts and experience at least once.

Eating Xeno Grilled Chicken with Distinct Charcoal Flavor

The first dish that cannot be missed is “Xeno Grilled Chicken,” a southern Lao-style grilled chicken cooked over fragrant charcoal by the locals themselves. Large chickens are marinated with unique and intense Lao spices, different from the grilled chicken commonly eaten in Thailand. The flavor of Xeno grilled chicken is slightly salty with aromas of lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and dried chili that enhance the taste remarkably.

The kids and I sat eating at an old wooden table set in the middle of the rice barn. The surrounding atmosphere was filled with lush green rice fields, birdsong, and cool breezes rustling through the rice leaves, making the food taste even better. Grilled chicken paired with hot sticky rice and spicy, tangy Lao papaya salad was a meal everyone will never forget.

Life in the Rice Barn: The Breath of Lao People

After recharging, we took a walk in the rice barn, which serves as a resting and working place for villagers during harvest season. mr.hotsia saw Lao children playing joyfully, chasing each other in the fields, and even tried helping villagers harvest rice by hand. Though tiring, it was filled with happiness that cannot be found elsewhere.

Here, there is no hustle and bustle, no car noises, only natural sounds and simplicity that make us feel truly connected to the world, just as I have described in my articleBoat Trip in Laos 3: Tense Moments Catching Large Fish with Nets Deep in the Mekong Forest at Muang HongsaThe atmosphere here is not much different.

Local Market: Hidden Delicious Food

If anyone thinks that visiting Laos means missing out on diverse local food, that’s completely wrong. In this small village, there is a local market open every evening. The kids and I walked around choosing fresh fruits and snacks such as grilled sticky rice cakes, grilled chicken, Lao rice noodles, and desserts made from sticky rice and fresh coconut. Each item offers flavors not easily found elsewhere.

This market is also a gathering place for villagers. Vendors chat warmly with each other, children play with puppies, creating a cozy atmosphere that made mr.hotsia feel like traveling back to his own childhood.

Easy Travel, Close to Nature

Traveling to this rural area in Laos may require some patience, but once you arrive, everything is definitely worth it. I recommend combining this trip with a Mekong river boat trip, as I have shared inBoat Trip in Laos 1: Bamboo Raft Adventure into the Deep Mekong Forest Mekong boat trip LAOSbecause the boat trip opens new perspectives to truly experience the Lao way of life.

A Unique Experience for Families

For families with young children, taking them to experience simple village life like the rice barn and eating Xeno grilled chicken opens their world to cultures and nature different from big cities. I, mr.hotsia, see this as an experience that perfectly combines knowledge and fun.

If you want to see the real atmosphere, you can watch the video cliphotsia kids school break trip 6/26: Eating Xeno Grilled Chicken in the Lao Rice Barnthat I recorded, showing the kids’ charm and the warmth of the Lao community clearly.

Summary

Visiting Laos during the school break with the kids allowed me, mr.hotsia, to see another side of our neighboring country that is rarely talked about. The simplicity of life, the warm rice barn, and the intensely flavored local dish Xeno grilled chicken all made this trip meaningful and unforgettable.

For those looking for a family school break destination combining nature and culture, I recommend trying this simple Lao experience. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
