Huayxai, Bokeo Province, a small riverside town full of charm
When talking about northern Laos, which is rarely mentioned, “Huayxai” in Bokeo Province becomes a destination that mr.hotsia wants to introduce to everyone. This small town on the banks of the Mekong River is peaceful yet filled with a lifestyle and culture worth exploring. It can be considered another perspective different from the usual image of Laos that many are familiar with.
Travel and the Atmosphere You Can Truly Feel
Huayxai is not a big city or a tourist spot full of facilities like Vientiane or Luang Prabang. Traveling here requires patience and an open heart to experience authentic local life. mr.hotsia chose to take a boat from the Thai side across the Mekong River to Huayxai, which is the best way to reach this town. Besides enjoying the beautiful scenery on both sides of the Mekong, you also get to experience the riverside community atmosphere where life goes on simply.
The atmosphere in Huayxai is quite calm, quiet, and friendly. Most people still live traditionally. Vendors in the small fresh market by the Mekong still speak the local Lao language, and the food seen in the market truly reflects the villagers’ way of life.
Lifestyle and Fresh Market in Huayxai
For mr.hotsia, the fresh market here is where I spent the most time because it’s unlike markets in big cities that focus on tourist goods. This market is where locals come to buy and sell daily necessities. Products range from fresh vegetables and seasonal fruits to fresh Mekong River fish caught nearby, including rare traditional Laotian dishes such as authentic spicy Laotian papaya salad and freshly steamed fragrant sticky rice.
mr.hotsia recommends trying the “Laotian Papaya Salad” freshly made by the vendor, with a bold spicy flavor that spares no mercy. Dip it with hot sticky rice and sit by the Mekong to enjoy the cool breeze. This kind of atmosphere is hard to find elsewhere. There is also grilled chicken marinated with authentic Laotian spices, crispy skin and tender meat, served with a homemade sweet and sour dipping sauce made with care.
Connection to Northern Laos and Mekong River Boat Routes
If you are an adventurous traveler like mr.hotsia, Huayxai is a great starting point for continuing a Mekong River boat trip to Muang Hongsa or even to explore travel routes likeLaos Boat Trip 1: Bamboo Raft Adventure into the Deep Mekong Forestthat I wrote about earlier. There, you will deeply experience the nature and authentic community lifestyle of northern Laos.
Additionally, this route connects to local markets such asKhamouk Market deep in the Mekong forest in Laoswhich is full of colors and diversity of various ethnic groups. Thus, Huayxai is a small gateway that offers a chance to experience the cultural and natural diversity of northern Laos authentically.
Recommended Accommodation and Living in This Small Town
Huayxai town does not have luxury hotels or large resorts but offers guesthouses and homestays with warm hospitality. mr.hotsia chose to stay at a riverside homestay, where talking with the homeowners and their families was the cultural exchange I enjoyed most on every trip.
In the evening, you can see locals helping each other prepare grilled food, and sometimes traditional music is played joyfully. This atmosphere is rare in big cities and helps mr.hotsia feel completely relaxed.
