Muang Kham Koet, Lak Sao, Laos: More Than Just a Rest Stop

Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I'll take you to truly experience the atmosphere of Muang Kham Koet, Lak Sao, Laos, also known by many as “Lak 20 Laos.” This is an important rest stop for travelers from Hanoi to Vientiane. I had the chance to pass this route and unexpectedly stopped here for lunch, which turned into a memorable experience on this Laos trip.

Muang Kham Koet is located not far from the Nam Phao border checkpoint, the crossing point from Vietnam into Laos. Here, small shops line the streets where you can stroll and find snacks before reaching Lak Sao, the main rest stop known for authentic Lao food and a simple rural atmosphere full of local life and friendliness.

Route and Travel: From Hanoi to Lak Sao

If you've ever taken a bus from Hanoi to Vientiane, you know the bus stops at Lak Sao to let passengers recharge before continuing to Vientiane. This spot is like a genuine local rest station. The bus stops for about an hour, enough time for me to explore the small market nearby and experience the lifestyle of Lak Sao residents.

At the Nam Phao checkpoint, crossing from the Vietnam side, a fee of 1 USD per person is collected as a goodwill gesture for border crossing. Then the bus takes us to Lak Sao (locally called “Muang Boon Koet”), where many roadside restaurants and shops offer lunch options before continuing the journey to Vientiane in the afternoon.

Atmosphere and Lifestyle at Lak Sao

What impressed me most was the simplicity here. Small wooden shophouses, grocery stores, and local eateries filled with the aroma of spices and herbs create a charm you won't find in big cities. Walking through the small market here reminded me of the morning markets I once visited inKhamuk Market, deep forest by the Mekong Riveror even the breakfast atmosphere atChanakram Townwhere Laos still preserves its traditional charm remarkably well.

At Lak Sao, I tried local dishes like spicy Lao papaya salad and soft sticky rice paired with fragrant grilled chicken cooked over charcoal with authentic Lao spices. It felt like eating at a countryside friend's home, not just a tourist restaurant. This was different from my previous experiences recorded atKaeng Bok Chakmu, Chakmu cuisineor even at Sam Neua market known for its flavorful Lao food.

Travel Tips

For those planning to travel by bus from Hanoi to Vientiane, be prepared for the stop at Lak Sao. Don't think of it as just a regular rest stop because here you have the chance to experience Lao local life in a less touristy way. Besides refueling with local food, you can stroll the small market, buy souvenirs, or snacks made from fresh local ingredients.

Also, if you arrive in Vientiane, remember that the international bus station is different from the station for travel to Thailand. Traveling between stations requires a tuk-tuk ride costing about 40 baht. I also had the charming and friendly experience of riding a Lao tuk-tuk.

Connecting Experiences with Travel in Laos

The simplicity and friendliness of the Lao people at Lak Sao reminded me of the experience of fishing with large fish traps in Hongsa, another side of Laos that still preserves its raw nature and authenticity.Boat Trip in Laos 3: Exciting Large Fish Trap Fishing in the Deep Forest Mekong at HongsaThis is another example showing how Laos still maintains a slow-life lifestyle well.

If you love food and want to try authentic intense flavors, I recommend following my experience at Lak Sao, then continuing with morning market visits or breakfast in Chanakram town. Or if you want to enrich your Laos trip with another local meal, don't missLao Food at Sam Neua Marketwhich was another highlight of my journey.

Passing through Muang Kham Koet, Lak Sao is not just a bus stop but a chance to experience real Lao life, taste unique local dishes, see a warm small market, and understand how life along this route still firmly preserves its identity.
