Kua Pla Som, an authentic Lao local dish at Ban Tha Suang by the Mekong River
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I'll take you to discover one of Laos' signature dishes that I personally experienced atBan Tha Suangon the Mekong Riverbank in Xayaburi Province. The dish is calledKua Pla Somor what Lao people call "Kua Pla Dek," a local dish with a unique aroma and rich flavor worth sharing.
Ban Tha Suang is a small village with about 40 households and around 100 people, nestled in the embrace of nature along the Mekong River. For me, traveling here was a memorable adventure, starting with a slow boat ride from Huay Sai to Pak Beng for an overnight stay, then catching the 9:30 AM boat—the only daily trip—to Luang Prabang. After just over an hour on the boat, I arrived at Ban Tha Suang. This was my chosen way to truly experience the traditional riverside life along the Mekong.
The fragrant aroma of Kua Pla Som filling P'Porn's kitchen
At Ban Tha Suang, I stayed in a homestay with P'Porn, the homeowner who doesn't officially run a homestay but, as a relative and friend, allowed me to experience genuine local dining at a friendly price of just 200 baht per day, including three meals. During one of these meals, I had the chance to tasteKua Pla Sommade with heart and fresh local ingredients.
In P'Porn's kitchen, the scent of spices and fermented fish being stir-fried in a hot pan wafted to my nose. I observed the simple yet skillful preparation requiring deep knowledge of ingredients. The fermented fish used is small fish, properly fermented to a perfect sourness without any fishy smell. When stir-fried with herbs like galangal, lemongrass, dried chili, and kaffir lime leaves, the aroma was so inviting that I wanted to immediately scoop up some hot sticky rice.
Riverside life and fresh fish catching for Kua Pla Som
Beyond the food, what impressed me most was going out with P'Porn's partner to catch fresh fish from the Mekong using a traditional net called "Mong," a 16-inch-wide net for catching large fish weighing 4-5 kilograms or more. This fishing method requires knowledge of water currents and techniques passed down within the community. I witnessed a lifestyle truly connected to the Mekong River, with the caught fish then used fresh for cooking.
I visited during the rainy season, so the fish caught were large and very fresh. This is an experience not easily found in typical tourism. For those interested in adventure and local food, I recommend followingthe Mekong big fish net fishing boat tripwhich I previously wrote about, perfectly linking to the lifestyle at Ban Tha Suang.
The atmosphere of Ban Tha Suang and its charming simplicity
Ban Tha Suang's name actually comes from the word "Suang" or "Suang," meaning bright, based on a local legend about a glowing rock in the Mekong River near the village's pier. Sitting by the riverbank, I felt a peacefulness and simplicity deeply connected to nature.
Staying in this village is not just about food but also about talking with locals, listening to folk stories, and witnessing a culture that remains unembellished. For those interested in this kind of atmosphere, more details can be found atWarm and hearty meals with the Lao people of Ban Tha Suangwhich I documented in a previous article.

Traveling to Ban Tha Suang combines boating and experiencing the raw nature of the Mekong River. The boat trip I present inBoat Trip in Laos 1: Sacrificing the Boat, an Adventure into the Deep Mekong Forestwill give you a clear overview of this route.
