Eat Mekong River Fish Porridge, Stay at Li Phi, Laos with mr.hotsia

This trip with mr.hotsia takes us along the Mekong River on the Laos side to a small village called Li Phi. Although it is not a popular tourist destination, this place has a raw charm that visitors will never forget, especially the “Mekong River Fish Porridge,” which I consider the highlight dish of this trip.

Li Phi is a village located on the banks of the Mekong River with a peaceful atmosphere. People still live simply following traditional ways. The cool morning air gradually cools down as the sun sets. I strolled through the small morning market here, which gathers fresh produce from the Mekong River, including large freshwater fish and local vegetables grown in backyard gardens, all fresh and with flavors unlike anything I've experienced before.

What made me return to Li Phi was tasting the fish porridge made from large fresh fish caught from the Mekong River. The porridge shop I recommend is a small riverside place where the owner starts selling from early dawn. The aroma of the porridge, simmered until tender, blends perfectly with the very large fresh fish pieces that almost melt in your mouth. The broth used to cook the fish is special, mixed with authentic Lao spices and herbs, delivering a balanced, mildly spicy flavor that suits the cool weather perfectly.

I, mr.hotsia, remember sitting and eating the porridge while looking out the window at the vast Mekong River, accompanied by the sound of small boats passing by. Riverside villagers paddled their boats to catch fish, a scene that beautifully depicts the simple yet profound life along the river.

After a satisfying meal, I chose to stay in Li Phi at a homestay. The place is not famous like a resort but offers the warmth of a true Lao home. Each homestay is decorated with natural materials like bamboo and hardwood. I talked with the host, who shared stories about the Lao riverside lifestyle, fishing methods, and traditional cooking passed down through generations.

For backpackers who love deep adventure and close contact with nature, I recommend trying to visit the Kha Mu local market deep in the forest along the Mekong River in Laos. Here, you will witness a completely different way of life.Kha Mu Local Market, LaosWhich I recorded on a boat trip in Laos, will enrich your Laos travel experience like no other.

If you like challenges and want to try traditional fishing with a large fish net, I invite you to seeTraditional Large Fish Net Fishing in Laoswhich is another experience that shows the Mekong River is not just an ordinary river but the heart of riverside communities that strongly preserve their traditional ways.

Back in Li Phi again, I recommend trying other dishes made from local ingredients such as fish curry with Lao herbs or spicy Lao papaya salad. If you enjoy authentic Lao spicy food, you must not miss these. Sometimes grilled chicken marinated with herbs is served with hot sticky rice, making the meal in Li Phi even more perfect.

To get to Li Phi, although it is not in a well-known province, the Mekong River route in Laos connects many interesting communities. I, mr.hotsia, recommend planning a deep boat trip in Laos to truly experience Lao nature and culture.Mekong River Boat Tripwhich I have shared before will open new perspectives and worlds for your journey.

Finally, if you love food and culture, I encourage you to watch the video I recorded on this trip titledEat Mekong River Fish Porridge, Stay at Li Phi, Laoswhich shows the real atmosphere and flavors I experienced firsthand. I guarantee you will want to book a ticket to Laos immediately.

Visiting Li Phi is not just about eating fish porridge; it is about experiencing the true riverside Lao lifestyle, witnessing the beauty of nature and the warmth of people who still hold on to their traditional culture. I, mr.hotsia, believe this will be one of the destinations you will remember for a long time.
