Kuah Pla Dek, an authentic local Lao dish from Ban Tha Suang, Hong Sa city

If you’ve followed my travels, mr.hotsia, you probably know I like to explore the real local lifestyle and food, not just famous restaurants or typical tourist spots. This time, I had the chance to visitBan Tha Suanga small village by the Mekong River in Hong Sa city, Xayaburi province, Laos. It’s the starting point of an unforgettable local food experience with the dishKuah Pla Dekprepared traditionally by the villagers. The fragrant aroma made me stop and hold my breath—truly extraordinary!

Ban Tha Suang, pronounced by locals as “Tha Suang,” comes from the word “Chuang” or “Sawang.” According to local legend, there is a bright stone in the Mekong River called Hin Sawang (Hin Chuang), a shining point in the river, which inspired the village’s name. I traveled here by slowly cruising from Huai Sai, passing Pak Bang, then taking a morning boat to Ban Tha Suang. The trip took less than an hour, revealing the simple and warm riverside lifestyle that left a strong impression.

How to Make Kuah Pla Dek the Ban Tha Suang Way

The Kuah Pla Dek dish I tasted is a source of pride for Ban Tha Suang villagers who firmly preserve the traditional taste and preparation method. It starts with fresh Mekong River fish caught using a “Mong” net, a wide 16-inch net used to catch large fish weighing 4-5 kilograms or more. Fishing is most effective during the rainy season. I had the opportunity to join P’Porn’s partner, the village’s expert fisherman, and witnessed the dedication and skill in every step.

After the fish is freshly caught, villagers clean and salt it before stir-frying with simple but perfectly balanced ingredients like dried chili, garlic, and various local herbs. The aroma of Kuah Pla Dek is uniquely fragrant, blending the savory saltiness of fermented fish with the scent of herbs and dried chili in perfect harmony.

Dining Experience with Ban Tha Suang Villagers

I stayed at P’Porn’s simple homestay for just 200 baht per day, including three meals. Every meal was home-style, featuring hot sticky rice with freshly made Kuah Pla Dek daily, along with other Lao dishes prepared by the villagers such as Mekong River fish curry and local vegetables. Eating here was not just about taste but about immersing in the culture and real lifestyle that few get to see.

Sharing meals with Ban Tha Suang villagers was warm and enjoyable. I exchanged stories about fishing, cooking, and local legends, feeling truly part of the community. If you’re interested in experiencing this atmosphere, I recommend contacting P’Porn directly. The villagers are friendly and welcome travelers eager to learn about the lifestyle deeply.

Travel and Boat Trip on the Mekong River

The easiest way to reach Ban Tha Suang is by boat from Huai Sai to Pak Bang, then transferring to a boat that departs only once daily at 9:30 AM. The trip takes just over an hour to the village. If you want to continue to Luang Prabang, it takes another 3-4 hours. I really enjoyed this Mekong River boat trip because besides the natural scenery on both sides, it offered a genuine glimpse of riverside village life.

For those interested in boat trips in Laos and experiencing hill tribe markets or deep local lifestyles, I have written aboutKha Mu Local Market Deep in the Forest by the Mekong Riverand the fishing experience with nets on the Mekong River inTense Moments Catching Large Lao Fish with Netswhich should nicely complement a Laos trip focused on authentic lifestyles.
