Pakxan Pho (Pakxan pho noodle soup Laos style) — Good morning from the peaceful riverside town

I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to arrive in Pakxan, a small and quiet town in Bolikhamxay Province of Laos. Many may not be familiar with the name, but if you enjoy relaxed travel and tasting authentic local food, Pakxan is a destination not to be missed. Especially the dish I want to share today — “Pakxan Pho,” a Lao-style beef noodle soup whose flavor and fragrant broth made me feel like I was awakening from a deep sleep that morning.

Pakxan is smaller than many other towns in Laos such as Sam Neua or Luang Namtha. The streets are quiet, and the vehicles passing through are mostly just passing by on the way to Vientiane or Khamsavath. Despite this, Pakxan has several hotels ranging from small budget accommodations to medium-sized hotels like “Pakxan Hotel,” owned by Vietnamese, offering over 32 rooms, massage services, and a small casino for tourists who want to rest before continuing to Thung Haihin in Houaphanh Province.

I arrived in Pakxan in the morning when the weather was still comfortably cool. The first thing I did was look for breakfast along the town’s walkway until I found a small, humble shop selling “Pakxan Pho.” The broth was mild and used fresh beef with the authentic aroma of Lao spices. The noodles were soft and chewy, and the seasoning was not too strong. Every bite felt warm and homely. I felt that Pakxan Pho differs from Vietnamese pho in that its taste is lighter and smoother, truly suitable for a morning meal.

For travelers wanting to experience the true atmosphere of Laos, I recommend trying Pakxan Pho at the small roadside shop where I sat. The owner was a local who spoke to me warmly. They also offered other dishes like sticky rice, grilled chicken, and Lao papaya salad to try. Having breakfast like this helped me understand the lifestyle of people in this small town better.

If you are interested in a travel route in Laos that remains raw and peaceful, Pakxan is a great starting point. For me, this town is not just a pass-through but a resting place that recharges and refreshes the body before heading to other places like Thung Haihin, which is not far away. Although the rainy season makes travel difficult and fewer tourists visit, the winter season here is lively and vibrant.

Besides food and the town’s atmosphere, seeing the lifestyle of the Lao people in Pakxan is a charm I really like. The few vehicles, quietness, and simplicity of daily life made me feel an indescribable relaxation. If anyone wants to experience this atmosphere closely, I recommend exploring the town’s market or visitingthe Khamu deep forest riverside marketwhich is not far away. There, you can see the lifestyle of the Khamu hill tribe in Laos and taste local dishes that are hard to find elsewhere.

For accommodation in Pakxan, I have stayed atKong Kamphang Guesthousewhich is a small hotel with a warm atmosphere and very kind owners. The room rates are affordable and it is close to markets and various restaurants. For those who want convenience and friendly service, this place is an interesting option not inferior to larger hotels.

For those who enjoy traveling by boat to explore nature, I recommend followingmy Laos boat trip serieswhich will introduce you to the Mekong River and the riverside lifestyle that remains raw and fascinating. For food lovers who adore local cuisine, I recommendauthentic Lao food at Ban Tha Suangwhich will give you a deep understanding of the flavors and eating culture of the Lao people.

In summary, Pakxan Pho is not just an ordinary noodle soup but a gateway to the deep feelings and experiences of a little-known small town in Laos. A town where peace and simplicity become a charm that cannot be found elsewhere. I, mr.hotsia, affirm that tasting authentic Pakxan Pho is one of the most impressive experiences of my Laos trip.
