Lao Rocket Festival at Xieng Khouang: A down-to-earth rocket festival experience full of real life
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today I'll take you across the border to Laos to experience the Rocket Festival tradition in Xieng Khouang province. The Rocket Festival here is not as grand as the one many are familiar with in Yasothon, Thailand, but it has the charm and sincerity of genuine Lao villagers that is rare to find nowadays.
Previously, I have attended the Rocket Festival in Yasothon several times, but this time I wanted a change of atmosphere. So I decided to see the simple, local version of the festival in Xieng Khouang, which is not far from the Plain of Jars that I have visited before. This event is not officially organized or managed by tourism authorities but is genuinely arranged by villagers from each community.
The Rocket Festival in Xieng Khouang has roots in folk legends shared by both Isan and Lao people. It tells the story of Phaya Kankak and Pha Daeng Nang Ai. Locals believe that launching rockets is a tribute to Phaya Than, the rain god or Vassaka deity who controls seasonal rains. Villagers here believe that if the Rocket Festival is not held, the rains will not come on time, potentially causing disasters.
On the festival day, I arrived in Xieng Khouang where the atmosphere was lively with villagers preparing their rockets. Each rocket varies in size and shape, from small homemade ones to the large 'Bang Fai Saen' rocket. This year, a large rocket from Vientiane was also showcased, brought by high-ranking officials from the Lao People's Party.
What impressed me most was the friendliness of the villagers. Everyone helped carry the rockets to the festival stage, arranging them by size and launch order. Small rockets were launched first, followed by progressively larger ones, ending with the 'Bang Fai Saen' as the final rocket. I witnessed beautiful rockets soaring into the sky amid cheers and the happiness of the villagers.
As I have seen in Thai Rocket Festivals, if a rocket explodes mid-air or does not fly straight, its owner is thrown into the mud. This tradition is also practiced here as a test of skill and luck for the maker. The atmosphere was full of fun and laughter.
Besides the Rocket Festival, I also stopped by a nearby market to try local food. I enjoyed hot sticky rice with spicy Lao papaya salad and grilled chicken scented with homemade herbs. It was a simple meal full of flavor and the authentic atmosphere of Lao people that left a strong impression on me.
If you want to experience a raw, non-touristy Rocket Festival and see the genuine lifestyle of Lao villagers, I recommend planning a trip to Xieng Khouang province. Here you will clearly see the difference from Thai Rocket Festivals and immerse yourself in authentic Lao culture.
For travel, I suggest renting a car or hiring a driver from Vientiane to Xieng Khouang. It takes about 4-5 hours. The route passes the beautiful Plain of Jars and you can also stop by the unique Kha Mu ethnic market.Kha Mu local market deep in the forest by the Mekong River in LaosThis journey is full of cultural and natural diversity.
If you enjoy boat trips and want a different experience, I have written several stories about boating in Laos, including one where I was tense while fishing for large fish with a net deep in the Mekong River forest at Muang Hongsa.Boat Trip in Laos 3These stories will make your trip more diverse and meaningful.
Because this Rocket Festival is a simple, unorganized event, the atmosphere is natural and sincere, something you cannot find in big city festivals. I, mr.hotsia, want to recommend this to anyone who loves deep travel experiences, wants to truly experience local life, and appreciates culture that remains firmly traditional. Don't miss this opportunity.
