Bang Fai Xieng Khouang Laos: A genuine experience of the fun Bang Fai festival by mr.hotsia
When talking about the Bang Fai tradition familiar in Thailand's Northeastern region, many probably think of the Yasothon Rocket Festival. But did you know that in Laos, especially in Xieng Khouang province, there is also a grand and lively Bang Fai festival? I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to travel and experience this event firsthand.Rocket Festival Xieng KhuangOr as the Lao people call it, “Bang Fai Xieng Khouang,” this event feels like stepping back in time to truly experience the lifestyle and culture of the Lao people.
Xieng Khouang is a province not as famous as Luang Prabang or Vientiane, but if you want to know Laos from a deeper perspective beyond typical cultural tourism, this Bang Fai festival is a great representative. I arrived in the afternoon on the festival day. The town was bustling with locals strolling through the market and joining various activities. The event features a parade of large rockets called “Bang Fai Saen” along the main street for the public to admire before they are launched at the festival.
What impressed me most was the sequence of rocket launches gradually increasing in size and power, starting from small rockets to the large highlight rockets. The excitement lies in the fact that if someone's rocket fails to launch or explodes mid-air, the owner is thrown into the mud as a playful punishment, which adds fun and entertainment for the audience.
During my visit, the festival chairman who launched a large rocket from Vientiane was unlucky as his rocket did not fly straight, and he was also thrown into the mud. I spoke with many locals who said that high-ranking Lao officials often come to this festival casually and humbly, unlike politicians in our country. This charm made me feel that this place is a warm community with simple, joyful fun.
Besides the rocket launches, the festival features electronic keyboard music with singers entertaining the crowd for singing and dancing. There are many food and drink stalls, especially the popular balloon-popping stall. Another unique feature I never saw at Thai Bang Fai festivals is a photo booth with various scenic fabric backdrops where people can take photos and print them in vivid colors on the spot—a very clever and charming service.
If you want to experience this atmosphere, be sure to plan your trip during the Bang Fai Xieng Khouang festival. It’s not just about watching fireworks but also about seeing the Lao way of life from a deeper perspective. Although Xieng Khouang is not a major tourist city, experiencing the Bang Fai festival here made me feel like I discovered another world of Laos that is both peaceful and warm. I, mr.hotsia, recommend opening your mind beyond the usual routes and experiencing the fun and friendliness of the Lao people in Xieng Khouang at least once. I guarantee you will have deep and unique memories unlike any other.
