Making Merit by Donating a Monk's Quarters at Ban Tha Suang, Muang Hongsa, Laos
Speaking of my journey, mr.hotsia, in the land of Laos, “Muang Hongsa” or “Hongsa Town,” located on the banks of the Mekong River, is a destination full of cultural stories, tranquility, and a simple way of life yet deeply spiritual. One of the most impressive experiences for me was making merit by donating a monk's quarters atBan Tha Suanga small village hidden in the midst of nature that still firmly preserves the authentic Lao way of life.
Traveling here is not easy because there are no large signposts like typical tourist towns. But this challenge made me feel I was truly experiencing the real Laos. From my direct experience, I took a boat from Hongsa town, passing the vast Mekong River before reaching the point where I had to walk into Ban Tha Suang village. Seeing the riverside life—fishermen pulling nets and children playing joyfully in the water—was a scene that filled my heart with peace.
Upon arriving at the temple in Ban Tha Suang, the first thing I felt was the peaceful atmosphere and the warmth from the villagers who sincerely came to make merit. The monk's quarters we donated are important as they serve as the monks’ residence in the temple. Participating in this donation felt like supporting the peaceful lifestyle of both the monks and the community together.
As mr.hotsia, I did not miss the chance to capture photos and videos of this impressive experience on my YouTube channel.Making Merit by Donating a Monk's Quarters at Ban Tha Suang, Muang Hongsa, LaosYou can clearly see the merit-making atmosphere and the villagers’ joyful laughter. Although it is just a small village, the kindness and faith of the people here made me feel that this trip to Laos was far more meaningful than ordinary tourism.
Lifestyle and Local Food at Ban Tha Suang
Besides making merit by donating the monk's quarters, I also made sure to experience the lifestyle and local food of Ban Tha Suang villagers in Muang Hongsa. The Lao food here retains its authentic taste from local ingredients, such as freshly cooked sticky rice and spicy Lao papaya salad that suits Thai taste buds like ours. I tried a rustic “Som Tam Lao” made with fresh chili from the garden and homemade fermented fish sauce. The flavor was intense and very refreshing.
The village atmosphere includes a small market where locals sell fresh vegetables, fruits, and handmade bamboo crafts. I had the chance to talk with a local vendor who told me that preserving traditional Lao culture is something they take great pride in.
