Today Mr.Hotsia indulges in large Pla Khae larb at Kaeng Pha Dai, the final point along the Mekong River

When it comes to eating large Pla Khae larb by the Mekong River in Laos, you have to trust my firsthand experience. I, Mr.Hotsia, traveled to Kaeng Pha Dai, the last point of the Mekong River before it flows into Laos. This place still preserves raw nature and the villagers’ simple yet uniquely charming way of life.

Kaeng Pha Dai is one of the viewpoints I highly recommend not to miss. Besides experiencing the peaceful flow of the mighty Mekong River, there is a small local restaurant I purposely visited. This restaurant is not far from the riverbank and is famous for its fresh and larger-than-anywhere Pla Khae larb.

I remember the elderly Lao man riding a new car he had just gotten recently, taking me to tour Wiang Kaen and stopping at this spot. He told me that the dirt road used to be quite difficult, but now the road has improved a lot, and the new car runs smoothly, making traveling to Kaeng Pha Dai much more convenient.

Large Pla Khae Larb, a Unique Flavor

When I tasted the larb here, I must say it was completely different from any larb I had eaten in Thailand. The large, fresh Pla Khae caught from the Mekong River was cut into small pieces and mixed with a spicy larb sauce, fragrant with Lao herbs such as mint leaves and shallots. It was served with hot sticky rice. Here, they emphasize naturalness and utmost freshness.

The larb here contains no MSG. The smoky fermented fish sauce and local spices give the larb its distinctive flavor. I guarantee that anyone who tries it will fall in love with it just like me. This is one of the best Pla Khae larb eating experiences of my life.

Strolling Along Kaeng Pha Dai, Watching the Mekong River Flow Between Two Countries

After a satisfying meal of Pla Khae larb, I didn’t miss the chance to stroll and explore around Kaeng Pha Dai. The atmosphere here is very peaceful. The Mekong River flows swiftly yet beautifully. I stood watching the Mekong River as it passes the border between Thailand and Laos, feeling impressed and thinking that this is a natural boundary perfectly created by nature.

I also saw the lifestyle of villagers living along the Mekong River. Small fishing boats sailed back and forth, and some people prepared to fish using traditional methods. It was a beautiful and charming scene. If you like this kind of atmosphere, I recommend you come and experience it yourself at least once.

Elderly Man Rides New Car Touring Wiang Kaen, a Small Town Full of Stories

Wiang Kaen is a small town not often talked about, but for me, it has a simple charm and stories to discover. The elderly Lao man I met on this trip told me that the new car he rode made traveling to Wiang Kaen much easier. This road connects many communities and local markets that still maintain traditional ways of life.

I stopped by a small market in Wiang Kaen filled with local products, including fresh vegetables, local fruits, and authentic Lao food that was very interesting. The market atmosphere is unlike typical tourist markets; it is simple and warm like a second home for the locals in this area. If you are interested in authentic Lao food, I recommend stopping by Wiang Kaen. You will understand that the joy of traveling is truly experiencing the local way of life.
