Laos High-Speed Train: A travel experience that transforms Laos from a new perspective

I, mr.hotsia, recently had the chance to experience the new high-speed train in Laos, which is an experience unlike any other and completely changes the old perception of traveling in Laos.

Previously, when thinking of Laos, many might imagine dirt roads, the Mekong River, and small local markets full of traditional lifestyles. But now, with the high-speed train project connecting Luang Prabang and Vientiane, as well as links to China and Vietnam, traveling in Laos has become much faster and more convenient. I was excited to try this route myself.

That day, I started at the Vientiane train station, which looked very modern and clean, unlike the usual image of train stations in neighboring countries. The Laos high-speed train reaches a top speed of about 160 kilometers per hour, greatly reducing travel time between cities. What used to take several hours by car now takes only a few hours.

Along the way, I enjoyed the natural scenery on both sides and passed through Laos’s beautiful green landscapes. The train passed small villages that tourists rarely visit, reminding me of the Kha Mu local market where I once experienced the rawness of a local Lao market.Read more about Kha Mu local marketThis is the charm of Laos that remains even with the addition of modern technology.

When the train passed over the Mekong River, I recalled a boat trip deep in the forest at Hongsa city from before. The thrilling experience of catching large fish with fishing nets in Laos. That place still maintains a very peaceful and natural atmosphere, contrasting with the modernity of the train. But these two complement each other, giving Laos a new dimension of travel and tourism.

For those worried that technology might cause Laos to lose its traditional charm, I can say you will be surprised. The high-speed train acts as a bridge connecting the simple lifestyle with more convenient travel opportunities. I recommend trying this train service and stopping at the town’s edge stations to enjoy local dishes like spicy Lao papaya salad or fragrant grilled chicken.Watch the grilled chicken and Lao papaya salad clip I once enjoyedI guarantee the real experience will not disappoint.

What impressed me most was the train’s comfort, smooth ride, and punctuality, which made trip planning much easier compared to buses or vans that often face traffic jams and slippery roads during the rainy season.

For travelers wanting to explore deep forests or continue with a Mekong River boat trip after using the high-speed train, I recommend experiencing the Mekong boat trip in Hongsa city.Read my story about the Mekong River boat tripOr try authentic Lao food at Ban Tha Suang, Hongsa city.Experience dining with Lao localsFilled with friendship and warmth.

Another point I want to share is the change in communities along the railway. The development that has come has not destroyed the old way of life but instead created opportunities for locals to earn extra income from tourists traveling more conveniently. I spoke with many locals who said they are happy to see Laos progressing while still preserving its identity.

If anyone is interested in trying new experiences in Laos, I recommend planning a trip starting with this high-speed train to open up a world of travel that is fast, comfortable, yet full of the warmth of true Lao life.
