Money Exchange Locations in Savannakhet, a border town you need to know before exploring Laos

Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I want to share my real experience from traveling toSavannakheta border town on the Laos side that many people are not very familiar with yet. But if you plan to visit or do business around here, you must know that money exchange is very important. Savannakhet is a province that still uses Lao kip and in some places also Thai baht. But where is the best place to exchange money? Where are the safe and convenient exchange points? I, mr.hotsia, will take you on an in-depth look from real experience.

Arriving in Savannakhet, where is the best place to exchange money?

I traveled from the Thai Isan side, crossing the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge at Mukdahan province. Once entering Savannakhet town, the first thing mr.hotsia did was to look for a bank that offers easy and safe money exchange. For me,Phongsavanh Bankis the best answer in this area. This bank is located in the city center, easy to spot with a large clear sign, and the staff can speak English reasonably well.

At Phongsavanh Bank, I exchanged Thai baht to Lao kip quickly. The exchange rate was not much different from the black market rate, which is better than exchanging money at outside money changers that sometimes have hidden fees or unclear exchange rates.

When mr.hotsia visited, many foreign tourists also used this service due to its reliability and safety with a more stable banking system. For anyone who wants confidence, I recommend exchanging money at this bank before heading deeper into other tourist spots in Savannakhet.

Lao Kip and Spending in Savannakhet

Many might wonder what currency to use in Savannakhet? mr.hotsia explains simply that Lao kip (LAK) is the main currency used daily. However, many tourists find that some shops, especially in tourist areas or large restaurants, also accept Thai baht, which is very convenient for Thai people who haven't exchanged much kip yet.

Nevertheless, carrying some kip is better because it helps you bargain or buy goods in local markets more easily. mr.hotsia recommends exchanging about 500,000 kip (approximately 1,500 baht) for short trips to feel comfortable without worrying about cash in Laos.

Other Money Exchange Locations and Tips from mr.hotsia

Besides Phongsavanh Bank, mr.hotsia found some small money exchange shops in town. But be careful about exchange rates and reliability because some shops offer better rates than banks but come with higher risks.

If you plan to visit local markets or natural spots farther away, such as the deep forest Kha Mu local market by the Mekong River in Laos,Kha Mu local marketor take a boat trip along the Mekong River in Muang Hongsa,Mekonghaving Lao kip on hand will make life much easier because some shops in those areas do not accept Thai baht and there are no banks or money changers available.

Another tip from mr.hotsia is to exchange enough kip but not more than necessary because Savannakhet has some ATMs but they are not everywhere and sometimes charge high fees.

Summary of Impressions on Money Exchange in Savannakhet

From mr.hotsia's real travel experience, Savannakhet is still a simple town with a strong local lifestyle. Money exchange requires good preparation. Phongsavanh Bank is my top choice for convenient and safe money exchange. But if you want to experience local markets or deep nature in Laos, don't forget to prepare Lao kip to fully enjoy your adventure.
