Kampang Yak in Laos: The mystery that mr.hotsia must explore
When it comes to a place that fascinates me and makes me want to return again in Laos, it has to be “Kampang Yak,” or what the locals call “Pha Heep,” from the ancient Funan Kingdom. It is located along the route from Tha Khaek to Vientiane, right at kilometer 7 on Highway 13.
I, mr.hotsia, arrived here with some skepticism because the name “Kampang Yak” sounds a bit exaggerated. But when I saw the massive stones stacked into a wall stretching hundreds of meters, it made me reconsider how ancient people could have built such a structure without modern tools.
This wall is not located in a city or large village but remains in a quiet, imposing forest. I explored around and saw that each stone was neatly stacked like a real ancient city wall. There is a legend that this site might have been part of the Funan Kingdom, one of the oldest kingdoms in Southeast Asia, even older than Cambodia’s Angkor Wat. However, no definitive evidence has confirmed this yet.
Regarding travel to Kampang Yak, I took Highway 13 connecting Tha Khaek and Vientiane, which is the main convenient road. But be careful because Kampang Yak is in the forest by the roadside with no clear signs. You must watch for kilometer marker 7 on the left side. I also asked local villagers to make sure I was on the right path.
The atmosphere around Kampang Yak remains naturally intact, with birdsong and forest scents that make you feel like you’ve traveled back to ancient times. It’s a rare experience in Laos. And if you have watchedmy video about Kampang Yak,you will see the atmosphere and grandeur of this wall more clearly than words can describe.
Besides Kampang Yak, there is much more to discover in Laos, such as a Mekong river boat trip where I once tried catching giant fish with a net deep in the forest.Boat Trip in Laos 3: The tense thrill of catching giant Mekong fish deep in the forestOr the Kha Mu local market deep in the forest by the Mekong River, full of hill tribe life and culture.Boat Trip in Laos 2: Raw and unmatched, the Kha Mu market deep in the forest by the Mekong River in LaosIf you have enough time, I recommend stopping by to experience a more authentic view of Laos.
For those interested in archaeology and history, Kampang Yak is a very intriguing destination because it remains full of mysteries. There is no clear research confirming when, why, or for what purpose this wall was built. But what mr.hotsia is sure of is that visiting here lets you truly experience the grandeur of a hidden past deep in the forest.
If you want to follow my footsteps here, prepare well with hiking shoes, drinking water, and a camera because the photo spots with Kampang Yak are beautiful and memorable. And if you want to learn more about local life and food in Laos, I have an article recommendation likeBoat Trip in Laos 8: Warm and full, sharing a meal with the people of Ban Tha Suangwhich will show you another fascinating side of Laos.
In summary, Kampang Yak in Laos is not just a pile of stones or an ordinary ancient site. It is a gateway to ancient stories still waiting to be discovered and debated. I, mr.hotsia, promise to return there again to gather more information and new experiences to share with everyone.
