Thai Song Dam Lao Song at Khao Yoi, Phetchaburi Province: A Changing Yet Valuable Cultural Way of Life

I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to visit the Thai Song Dam community, also called “Lao Song” by the Lao people, at Khao Yoi, Phetchaburi Province. This is one of the places reflecting the lifestyle and culture of the Thai Song Dam people still remaining in Thailand. Previously, I experienced the authentic Thai Song Dam people in Dien Bien Phu, Vietnam, as well as visited Tai houses in Sapa and White Thai houses in the western area of Hanoi. This visit to Khao Yoi felt like tracing the culture I had encountered before, but here I found many changes, including the traditional clothing that is now rarely seen.

I traveled to Khao Yoi during a time when the traditional homestays that once served tourists had closed. The only place open for visitors now is the Lao Song Cultural Center, which strives to preserve and share the stories of the Thai Song Dam people for visitors to learn. Although it is not the same experience I had in Vietnam, the lifestyle and community spirit in Khao Yoi have their own charm and interest.

Travel and Atmosphere in Khao Yoi

Getting to Khao Yoi, Phetchaburi Province, is not very difficult. I drove for about an hour from Phetchaburi city to reach this Thai Song Dam village. The surroundings are filled with rice fields and small mountains, peaceful and natural. Most villagers still farm and live simply, which is quite different from the image I saw in Thai Song Dam villages in Vietnam.

Inside the Lao Song Cultural Center, I experienced displays of traditional tools and demonstrations of weaving and making unique Thai Song Dam jewelry. Although there were few traditional costume displays, the cultural storytelling and history helped deepen understanding of this community’s roots.

Local Food and Enduring Way of Life

One unforgettable impression from my visit to Khao Yoi was the local food, which was flavorful and unique. I tried Lao Song dishes including sticky rice dipped in homemade chili paste and grilled chicken scented with local spices. There were also fresh vegetables from villagers’ gardens. Anyone who loves authentic local food will surely be delighted.

Moreover, the villagers’ lifestyle remains simple and warm. I had the chance to talk with elders who shared stories about the community and changes over the past decades. Despite increasing outside influence, the bond with traditional culture is intentionally preserved.

Summary of Experience and Feelings from mr.hotsia

Visiting the Thai Song Dam community, also called Lao Song, at Khao Yoi, Phetchaburi Province, was another joyful experience for me, mr.hotsia. Although I did not see the full traditional Thai Song Dam culture as in Vietnam, learning about and experiencing the culture still present in Thailand is invaluable for travelers seeking authentic folk culture.

If you want to travel off the beaten path and discover real-life stories of communities with interesting histories, visiting Khao Yoi, Phetchaburi will not disappoint. I encourage you to plan a visit yourself because the feelings and images you gain will stay with you for a long time.
