ATM withdrawal experience in Laos by mr.hotsia

Traveling in Laos for me, mr.hotsia, offers many perspectives—not only about the scenery or food but also about the convenience of daily life during the trip. One important topic to seriously discuss is withdrawing cash from ATMs in Laos, which is something travelers should prepare for and understand well.

The last time I traveled to Sayaboury Province, a place few tourists reach due to mountainous and challenging routes, I had the chance to use the ATM service of Lao Development Bank in this town. Most ATMs in Laos still support Thai credit and debit cards well, especially those with VISA or Mastercard systems.

For anyone planning to travel to Sayaboury or other towns in Laos such as Muang Ngeun, Muang Hongsa, or Ban Tha Suang, I recommend bringing Thai ATM or credit cards. Although there are local shops and fresh markets to exchange Lao kip, withdrawing cash from ATMs is more convenient and safer. Moreover, it offers better exchange rates than exchanging cash at unofficial money changers.

How I actually withdrew cash from an ATM in Laos

I, mr.hotsia, started my journey from Muang Ngeun to Huay Kon checkpoint, taking about 3 hours on winding mountain roads. Upon arriving in Sayaboury town, I stopped to withdraw money from a bank ATM located downtown. It was a relatively new ATM that supported Thai cards without any issues.

The withdrawal process is similar to what we use in Thailand: insert the card, select language (English supported), enter the amount to withdraw. The system charges fees according to the bank's rates. I recommend withdrawing a large amount at once because some areas in Laos have few ATMs and sometimes the cash runs out quickly.

A caution I encountered is that some ATMs in Laos limit the maximum withdrawal amount per transaction, unlike ATMs in Thailand. Sometimes you need to withdraw multiple times if you want a large sum. Also, don't forget to notify your Thai bank before traveling that you will use your card abroad to prevent card blocking by fraud prevention systems.

The importance of having cash in Laos

Although many major cities in Laos are entering the digital age with credit card acceptance and e-payment systems, in mountainous provinces like Sayaboury, local markets, roadside restaurants, and even guesthouses I recommend, such as Nok Nong Guesthouse with affordable rates and a kitchen for self-cooking, cash payment remains essential.

If you plan to travel to remote areas or enjoy deep river cruises in Laos as I have shared inMekong River Cruise in Laos 1: Boat Abandonment - An Adventure into the Deep Forest of the Mekong Riveror want to experience raw local markets likeKha Mu Local Market Deep in the Forest by the Mekong River in Laosyou will see that cash remains a key to living and shopping.

Experience after withdrawing cash in Sayaboury Province

After withdrawing cash, I took a walk along the Houng River in Sayaboury, where the atmosphere is peaceful and the people are friendly, very different from big cities like Vientiane. I stopped to taste local dishes such as sticky rice, grilled chicken, and spicy Lao papaya salad at a roadside restaurant near the guesthouse I recommended.Warm and fulfilling meal gathering with locals at Ban Tha Suang, Muang Hongsa, SayabouryIt was a very impressive experience.

During my stay, I felt that having cash on hand made it much easier to buy food or necessities locally without worrying about money transfer systems or unstable mobile signals in remote areas. If you want to truly experience the lifestyle of Lao people, carrying Lao kip for spending in fresh markets or local eateries will definitely give you new perspectives.

Summary of recommendations for tourists who want to use ATMs in Laos

  • Prepare ATM/credit cards that work internationally and notify your Thai bank before traveling.
  • Check the ATMs in the area you will visit, as some places may limit the withdrawal amount per transaction.
  • It is recommended to withdraw a large amount at once because some ATMs may not have much cash.
  • Keep some Lao kip cash as a backup for spending in local markets, restaurants, and guesthouses.
  • For those who enjoy adventurous travel, check out my experiences of river cruising and local markets in Laos that I have written about.Mekong River Cruise in Laos 3: Exciting Big Fish Net Fishing Deep in the Forest of the Mekong River at Muang Hongsa

All of this is from my real experience, mr.hotsia, using ATMs in Laos at Sayaboury Province. I hope everyone planning to travel to Laos prepares and plans their finances well for a smoother, more enjoyable, and safer trip.
