Muang Raberd Xieng Khuang: A travel experience full of real-life stories

When talking about Xieng Khuang province in Laos, many may think of its natural beauty or simple culture. But for me, mr.hotsia, traveling here was an experience filled with historical perspectives and the harsh realities of war still clearly visible in every corner of Xieng Khuang city, also commonly called "Bomb City Xieng Khuang" because this area was one of the places bombed with millions of tons during the Indochina War.

Xieng Khuang is not a province well known to outsiders like Luang Prabang or Vientiane, but in fact, it has a unique charm. I had the chance to experience the lifestyle of locals who still live among bomb remnants and obstacles from an unforgettable past.

A Living Bomb City

Upon arriving in Xieng Khuang, the first thing that caught my eye was the bomb remnants creatively repurposed as house pillars, cattle barn posts, and even decorations for restaurants and accommodations. This is remarkable and shows the resilience and creativity of the locals here. Most of these bombs are the outer shells called "bomb casings," inside which are many small spherical bombs.

But the frightening truth is that many unexploded bombs still hide in forests and fields. Places that seem natural are actually full of danger. I spoke with UXO (Unexploded Ordnance) officers, an international unit responsible for inspecting and clearing these bombs. Locals working in this unit earn about 4,000 baht per month and must search for bombs daily. Some days they find new ones still buried underground. These experiences showed me that traveling here is not a game; extreme caution is required. Never stray off marked paths.

Travel and Tourism Experience

My trip to Xieng Khuang started with a journey from Muang Hongsa, a convenient connection point for travelers seeking adventure. I chose to travel by car along winding routes filled with mountain and field views. Here, I experienced the lively yet simple atmosphere of local markets with many traditional foods to try, such as grilled chicken, Laotian tam, and hot sticky rice, which are my favorite dishes from past experiences.Laos Boat Trip 8In Muang Hongsa

One must-see destination is the old tank wrecks left exposed to the sun and rain by the roadside, soon to be displayed in the new war museum in Xieng Khuang. Seeing these artifacts up close made me truly feel the seriousness and cruelty of the war that once took place here.

Warnings and Precautions for Travelers

If you plan to travel to Xieng Khuang, the important point I, mr.hotsia, want to emphasize is never to walk off the paths designated by the UXO unit because many unexploded bombs remain uncleared. Traveling here requires a local guide or expert officer to advise you, and you must strictly follow their instructions for safety.

For those interested in bomb clearance and detection stories, I have prepared a special article about the UXO work here, which will help you understand the difficulties and importance of this job more deeply.

Xieng Khuang may not be as beautiful or convenient as other tourist destinations, but for me, mr.hotsia, visiting here is experiencing living history, a lesson and a heartfelt experience of the locals. If you are ready for a journey filled with both beauty and thrill, "Bomb City Xieng Khuang" awaits your visit.
