Xieng Khuang Fish Market: A Bright Morning in a Small Lao Town

If you enjoy waking up early to explore markets in new towns that still retain their natural and simple charm, Xieng Khuang Fish Market in Laos is a destination that mr.hotsia strongly recommends. I had the chance to experience the morning market atmosphere here myself, and I must say it feels different from other morning markets I've visited. Xieng Khuang is a small town that firmly preserves the traditional charm of the Lao people.

Xieng Khuang Fish Market is located along the town's main road, where I strolled past neatly lined shops. In the morning, the market is divided into two main zones: one selling fresh vegetables and fruits that look very clean and fresh, and the other selling fish and seafood caught from local rivers. Around the market, there are small Lao coffee shops where you can sip hot coffee with a fragrant aroma. I must say, if you come to Xieng Khuang and don't try the coffee at this morning market, you are missing out.

What I really liked was the morning alms-giving activity here. This tradition of making merit remains an integral part of daily life in Xieng Khuang. Local villagers come out together to offer alms along the road beside the market. Visitors can buy fresh items from the market to prepare offerings with them. It’s a great opportunity to deeply experience the peaceful and simple lifestyle of the locals.

Lifestyle and Breakfast at Xieng Khuang Market

The fresh vegetables at this market impressed me a lot. They are so fresh that you can feel the difference from other markets I have visited. This market focuses on truly local fresh produce, including native vegetables, seasonal fruits, as well as fish and seafood caught from local water sources. Importantly, the prices are very reasonable compared to the freshness you get.

For breakfast, there are several curry rice shops serving food by scoop that you can try. I recommend ordering simple single dishes freshly made, served with fragrant sticky rice and a homely flavor infused with local ingredients. Enjoy it with a cold Lao beer at Sim Mali restaurant, which I have tried and was impressed by both the price and taste. This place is a must-visit if you come to stroll around Xieng Khuang Fish Market in the evening.

Accommodation and Transportation in Xieng Khuang Town

Regarding accommodation, mr.hotsia can say that Xieng Khuang town is well prepared. No need to worry about booking in advance as there are options ranging from budget guesthouses costing just over a hundred baht to newly opened hotels in the town center. They are conveniently located close to the morning market, perfect for those who want to wake early to stroll the market or participate in alms-giving.

Internet service in this town is available in some places, such as internet cafes near the market entrance, and some accommodations offer free Wi-Fi. However, it’s best to confirm as some places limit usage time. I personally encountered a place that advertised “free internet” but it was actually free for only half an hour. This is a small but useful tip to know before traveling.
