Most tourists take a car from Pakse to Nakasang or may buy a bus ticket from a hotel in Pakse to Don Det and get off at Nakasang pier as well. Boats from Nakasang to Don Det run continuously and depart once full due to many tourists. If there are no tourists, you can rent a whole boat for 200 baht to Don Det. There are two main boarding points from Nakasang to Don Det: Don Det Head and Central Don Det, about half a kilometer apart. Don Det Head has more accommodations including air-conditioned rooms.
Central Don Det has fewer accommodations and no air-conditioned rooms. I recommend boarding at Don Det Head and then slowly looking for accommodation nearby because on the return trip from Don Det you must board the boat from Don Det Head anyway. There are two times when boat fares from Don Det to Nakasang are cheaper, if I remember correctly at 7:30 and 10:30 AM. These are regular small boats shared among tourists with fares only a few tens of baht. Outside these times, you must pay about 200 baht for a whole boat rental.
