Sam Neua, Houaphan Province - Sam Neua Bus Station, Houaphan Province

Project gen about hotsia

Sam Neua Bus Station, Houaphan Province http://www.hotsia.com > Sam Neua, Houaphan Province > Sam Neua is the most rural area of Laos, but there is still Lao Airlines service here. Laos has airports in almost every province to facilitate access to different areas because the country is mountainous and forested. Traveling by car can take days, and urgent trips are not possible without flights. Therefore, airports are located in almost every remote province.

Lao Airlines flies from Vientiane to Sam Neua three times a week. A one-way ticket costs 2,500 baht per person, and a round-trip ticket costs 4,800 baht. Lao Airlines is relatively expensive and cannot be compared to low-cost airlines in Thailand. Flights operate on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. The airport is about 3 kilometers from Sam Neua, and a tuk-tuk ride costs 30 baht per person. For road travel, I have detailed distances and travel times in the image below.

Sam Neua is quite far; for example, traveling from Vientiane to Sam Neua takes 22 hours. You can travel by bus from Xieng Khouang and Oudomxay. From Xieng Khouang, the bus to Phonsavan departs at 7:00 AM, which is the trip I took. The bus passes Nam Neun and arrives in Sam Neua in the evening. The view from Sam Neua bus station looks over the town. There are two daily buses from Sam Neua to Phonsavan, taking 10 hours and costing a little over 200 baht per person. The morning trip leaves at 9:00 AM, and the afternoon trip leaves at 1:00 PM.

The bus continues from Phonsavan to Vientiane, taking about 22-24 hours in total. The fare from Sam Neua to Vientiane is over 400 baht per person. Additionally, buses from Sam Neua go to Nong Khieo, near Muang Ngoy in Luang Prabang Province. You can inquire about prices at the bus station as fares in Laos are generally inexpensive. From Sam Neua, you can also connect to Vietnam by bus, transferring at Tang Hua, a town in Vietnam before reaching Hanoi. I strongly advise buying tickets only to Tang Hua.

Because there can be issues requiring you to buy a new ticket, as the driver might drop you off and the new bus driver may not understand, forcing you to purchase another ticket. I have experienced this myself. Vietnamese is difficult to speak, and communication can be challenging since few Vietnamese speak English, which may cause misunderstandings. In summary, to travel to Sam Neua, I recommend taking a regular bus from Luang Prabang. If coming from Thailand, go to Nong Khai or Vientiane (there are buses from Nong Khai/Udon to Vientiane) and then transfer to Luang Prabang.

You might stay in Luang Prabang for two nights before continuing by bus to Sam Neua. Enjoy your trip! Next time, I will post about traveling by bus from Sam Neua to Vietnam. ..Mr.Hotsia June 2010.
