Ban Chiangkok is a small village with only a few houses. At the Mekong riverside, there is an immigration checkpoint. Boats coming from Xishuangbanna must stop to register first. There is a passenger boat from Xishuangbanna to Chiang Saen that stops at Ban Ton Phueng, but not daily. I came to visit Ban Chiangkok hoping to take a boat to Ban Ton Phueng.
The Laos side opposite Chiang Saen. It turns out there is no passenger boat from Chiangkok to Ban Ton Phueng for tourists. However, I heard that Lao people can take cargo boats to Ban Ton Phueng. Lao people from Muang Long come to Thailand by boat along the Mekong River. On the return trip, they go back via Luang Namtha. Lao people in this area still trade, buying sound systems and TVs from the Thai side in Chiang Rai city.
At Ban Chiangkok, I saw Chinese-run accommodations by the Mekong River costing only a few baht per night. Officials do not allow us to walk around at night or take boats along the Mekong River. So I did not stay overnight at Ban Chiangkok. I checked out and returned to sleep in Muang Long. There is no regular bus service here; you must have someone to run the route or rent a vehicle. The distance between Ban Chiangkok and Muang Long is about 30 kilometers. There is a police checkpoint checking passports along the way. I do not recommend tourists visit this town at this time.
But this may change in the future. If I remember, I will update that travel is more convenient.
