An hour (60 kilometers) There are several buses daily from Muang Sing Bus Station to Muang Long. Muang Long is a small town with only a little flat land and a few hundred houses. Muang Rong has a market in the town center and a newly opened Development Bank ATM. On a low hill, there is a newly built stupa. It’s not far from the town to visit Muang Long Stupa. If you take a bus from Muang Sing to Muang Long, the bus station is before entering the town on the hill, so you have to walk down into the town.
Alternatively, you can take a hired car, which is a bit hard to find because this town is small. Muang Rong has two or three guesthouses and one hotel, with prices around 300-400 baht per night. The rooms have no air conditioning because I think it’s not hot here. The place I stayed worked well. I stayed a second night there because other places were full, especially one run by Chinese people nearby, which was not good at all. It’s located near the front of the market. I recommend Thatsany Guesthouse, phone 020 5348337, safe, clean, and affordable. There are no hotels in Muang Long town.
There is wifi everywhere; I checked. Restaurants in Muang Long are near the morning market to the east, next to the rice fields. I ate a large plate of stir-fried basil rice and drank Lao beer there. For breakfast, I recommend pho in front of the Muang Long morning market; it’s delicious and you can enjoy watching people shopping, giving a true travel atmosphere. You can also try northern Thai-style khao soi at this restaurant. The main attraction in Muang Long is visiting various ethnic villages with diverse tribes.
When I went, I rented a car from a brother who drove from Muang Sing to take me sightseeing. Driving about 15 kilometers toward Ban Chiang Kok, there are Lan Tan villages, Gui tribe villages, and Akha tribe villages. This town is an ethnic town. In Muang Long town, the people are Lue, Akha, and Lao. Visiting ethnic villages, strolling the morning market, climbing Muang Long stupa, and walking around to see the local lifestyle is enough for Muang Long. mr.hotsia January 2013 mr.hotsia recommends hotels in Luang Namtha.
