About 1-2 hours north from Luang Namtha town, Muang Sing is mainly inhabited by the Lue people and has Lue restaurants. This town was once part of Burma but later became part of Laos. To get to Muang Sing, you must take a bus from Luang Namtha town, which runs several times daily but may not always depart on time if there are few passengers. Muang Sing is close to the Chinese border at Boten, so there are many Chinese shops in town, similar to Udomxay and Muang Long where many Chinese merchants sell goods.

Muang Sing is one of the main tourist destinations in Luang Namtha Province because it is home to many ethnic groups. Just renting a bicycle and riding out of town will bring you to various ethnic villages. I recommend checking the ethnic tourism map of Muang Sing first to plan your trip so you don't miss interesting hill tribe villages. I have seen many foreigners come here specifically to study the lives of different hill tribes. I personally did not visit the hill tribe villages here but went to Muang Long instead.

There are about 6 guesthouses in Muang Sing that I noticed. I stayed at Chanthimmeng Guesthouse, phone 0305110834. It has wifi but it is unstable and disconnects often, just enough to check email. The guesthouse is located in the town center above a Tai Lue restaurant, costing about 150 baht per night, affordable with mosquito net sleeping like the Lue people. Across the street is another room for 400 baht, owned by the same person. Staying here means you can walk to the morning market easily. I recommend it.

No need to go far for internet if you prepare a Lao Unitel 3G SIM and an Android phone that can share wifi. The must-try food in Muang Sing is Khao Soi Nam Na or Lue-style Khao Soi, which is a Khao Soi without coconut milk. This style is also sold in northern border areas adjoining Laos. In Chiang Mai, Khao Soi is made with coconut milk and tastes different. The Khao Soi shop is in the town center near the Tai Lue restaurant. Besides Lue Khao Soi, don't miss the Lue fermented rice at the market.

When in Tai Lue land, you must try Lue cuisine. I recommend renting a bicycle to explore Muang Sing town and ride out to the hill tribe villages. Just 7 kilometers out, you can see authentic lifestyles. This town is Tai Lue with a Tai Lue temple. Lue monks return home for meals and to care for their parents. These are some of the charming aspects of Muang Sing. When I visited, I didn't know and didn't rent a bike. Friends, please explore and share your experience with me.
