Visiting far away Luang Namtha, the first two or three days are still fresh, still eating sticky rice with grilled chicken and grilled fish every day. But after several days, I started craving delicious steamed rice, sour curry, rich curry, and golden omelets like when I ate in Thailand. It's natural when traveling abroad to recharge with familiar food from time to time to keep enjoying meals happily for many more days. About restaurants in Luang Namtha:

The place where I felt familiar as if in Thailand was a Chinese restaurant located just past the Bank of the Lao PDR, a bit further towards the post office on the right side. This place is professional; everything they make is delicious. I ordered stir-fried tofu and stir-fried vegetables, or if you want an omelet, this place is definitely tasty, made by skilled cooks. The seller is Chinese and speaks little Lao. Another restaurant is Banana, located right next to the Bank of the Lao PDR; if you face the bank, it’s on the right side, just a bit further.

This restaurant operates from evening until midnight, offering made-to-order dishes of all kinds. It's a great spot to enjoy Lao beer. The restaurant closes at 10 PM or when customers are finished. Restaurants in Luang Namtha are relaxed and informal, selling food in a casual way, reflecting the more flexible Lao lifestyle compared to Thai people. Both these restaurants serve main meals for lunch or dinner. However, if you want breakfast with rice, it’s hard to find; there are only pho shops across from the Bank of the Lao PDR.

There are many pho shops around here, but not all are delicious. For me, it depends on the seasoning. Pho isn’t tasty from the start; it needs to be seasoned to be delicious. As for Lao coffee, it’s widely available. Almost every pho shop sells traditional Lao coffee, which is similar to Thai traditional coffee, made the same way with a similar taste but usually sweeter, so ask for less sugar when ordering. From morning to noon to evening, for snacks, the night market or beyond is the place. Plenty of food focusing on Lao cuisine.

There are many unique snacks and dishes not found in Thailand. For example, grilled bananas stuffed with coconut, which is quite tasty. Or if you want to try coconut milk with pandan jelly, you might wonder why try it in Luang Namtha when Thailand has plenty. The answer is I wanted to taste fresh coconut milk freshly pressed by Lao people to see how it pairs with pandan jelly in Lao style. The verdict: delicious, fragrant, and sweet. This shop is inside the night market. Try it; you won’t be disappointed.

At the night market, popular foods sold and eaten a lot include grilled chicken, grilled chicken tail, and grilled eggs. The eggs are taken out, seasoned, then put back into the shell before being grilled over low heat. This dish is similar to what’s sold in Ubon. If you want the original style, try it here. Mr.Hotsia recommends a hotel in Luang Namtha. The pho shop next to my accommodation opposite the Bank of the Lao PDR is delicious. You can walk in and take photos in the kitchen, where pho is made in a traditional Lao kitchen style. Before seasoning, it’s not tasty. The small Lao bean sprouts here are delicious.

Lao bird’s eye chili is plump and green. Lao bantam eggs boiled are delicious. Lao boiled chicken eggs served Lao style on a plate. Stir-fried vegetables at the Chinese restaurant I find delicious. Stir-fried tofu with dried chili Chinese style is tasty.
