I traveled from Luang Prabang, took a van at 1:30 PM, passed the sunset viewpoint at Phu Phieng Fa, then arrived at Vang Vieng. It took nearly 6 hours from Luang Prabang. The roads are passable but have quite a few potholes and are not very good, so the 200-300 kilometers distance takes longer than usual. Accommodation in Vang Vieng is very cheap, possibly because it is a backpacker destination for foreigners. Prices start with basic rooms with natural ventilation in shophouses without river views and shared bathrooms at only

120 baht per night. If by the river with a beautiful view, the price is 400 baht per night. Rooms have no TV but have hot water. Rooms with TV and air conditioning like hotels by the river start at 400 baht and up. Mr.Hotsia recommends walking around to choose the place you like. I stayed by the river with the best view in Vang Vieng next to the wooden bridge for 600 baht per night, borrowing from the neighboring shop. Another night I stayed in an old house upstairs near the old Nam Song River for 400 baht per night, quality beyond the price.

Most restaurants in Vang Vieng cater to international tourists. Single dishes cost 60 baht and up. There are many restaurants offering bland Western-style food. If you want to eat Lao or Thai style with strong flavors like sticky rice, papaya salad, grilled chicken, you can walk to the night market next to the Vang Vieng badminton court.
