Ride a trishaw to explore Pathein city in Ayeyarwady Region, Myanmar with mr.hotsia

When it comes to traveling in Myanmar, many might think of cars or buses, but for mr.hotsia, ridinga trishawin Pathein city, Ayeyarwady Region, is a truly authentic and charming experience. The trishaw allowed me to closely experience the local life, see the community way of life, streets, fresh markets, and the aroma of local food in the air.

Pathein is the main city of Ayeyarwady Region, located in the Irrawaddy River delta. This large river flows through all of Myanmar and is a vital artery for trade and the livelihood of the people here. (For those interested in the Irrawaddy River, I have written a detailed articleIrrawaddy River Myanmarabout it.) Pathein is therefore a center for water transportation and a city rich in cultural diversity and must-try local cuisine.

Starting the trishaw ride with mr.hotsia

I started from the morning market in Pathein city, where trishaws often wait for passengers. The atmosphere here is lively, with local vendors selling fresh produce, fruits, vegetables, and neatly arranged dried goods. The trishaw I rode was traditional, still powered by a motorcycle engine. The engine made a small buzzing sound but took us quickly to every corner of the city.

Along the way, mr.hotsia saw old houses with Burmese architecture blended with colonial-era influences. Some still preserve beautifully carved teak wood designs like those seen in Pyin Oo Lwin, a city I have visited before (read the review atPyin Oo Lwin). Both sides of the road were lined with tempting street food stalls and peaceful temples, perfect spots for a relaxing break.

Markets and street food – the freshness of Pathein

One of the highlights that impressed mr.hotsia was tasting local food at the central market in Pathein. There are many dishes to choose from, including traditional Burmese noodles with a fragrant, rich broth, or Burmese biryani with intense flavors that make you want to order more. For those wanting to fully experience local cuisine, I recommend reading the stories I have shared inLocal cuisine of Pathein cityandBurmese noodles in Pathein citywhich provide detailed insights into the eating culture here.

While riding the trishaw through the market, I saw Burmese women selling colorful traditional sweets made from sticky rice flour mixed with coconut and palm sugar, sweet but not overpowering. There were also fried fish and pork meatballs served with a delicious dipping sauce. I couldn’t resist trying them all until the plate was empty.

Life along the Irrawaddy River and the tranquility of Pathein city

Pathein is located not far from the Irrawaddy River, Myanmar’s main river, which I have described in detail in the articleIrrawaddy River MyanmarRiding the trishaw gave me a view of riverside life — fishermen repairing wooden boats, villagers loading fruits and vegetables onto boats to sell at the riverside market. The atmosphere was peaceful yet full of life.

In the evening, the sunset light reflected on the Irrawaddy River’s surface, making Pathein look especially beautiful and warm. I didn’t miss the chance to relax by the river before heading back to try more delicious food in town.

A unique trishaw trip

For mr.hotsia, riding a trishaw around Pathein is not just transportation but a gateway to the real life of Myanmar in Ayeyarwady Region. Talking with the local trishaw driver and hearing small stories about the city and its history made me feel like I traveled back in time.

For anyone wanting to deeply experience Myanmar and connect closely with the community, mr.hotsia recommends trying a trishaw ride in Pathein city. You will surely love this city as much as I do.

If you want to know more about Pathein or see real photos and videos, mr.hotsia recommendsTrishaw ride video around Pathein citythat I recorded, including videos about the delicious Burmese food and noodles that you must try.
