Pyin Oo Lwin, Myanmar: A Mini India on the Shan Highlands

When talking about cities, I, mr.hotsia, must say this is another side of Myanmar, clearly different from the mainland images like Mandalay or Yangon. Pyin Oo Lwin is located on the Shan Highlands in the Ayeyarwady Region of Myanmar. It has a unique charm that sometimes I call it “Mini India” in Myanmar because of its unusual blend of atmosphere and culture.

This city is 1,070 meters above sea level, making the weather cool and pleasant all year round. When I visited, I even had to wear a light jacket, unlike the heat in Mandalay which is not far away. Just a two-hour drive covering 67 kilometers from Mandalay brings you to the refreshing air on this plateau.

Field Stories: Pyin Oo Lwin from mr.hotsia’s Perspective

I, mr.hotsia, have had the chance to visit this city several times because it was a British colonial hill station and military base during the Burmese wars, where Indian soldiers were involved. This has left a lasting Indian cultural influence. You will see many Indians living here, and the atmosphere feels like stepping into old India.

What impressed me most was walking around the city with horse-drawn carriages that look different from usual ones. The houses still maintain British colonial architecture. There is a large clock tower in the city center, a meeting point for locals and tourists. Importantly, the National Kandawgyi Gardens is a popular spot for relaxation, beautifully landscaped with a great atmosphere.

Convenient Travel and Real Experiences

If you plan to visit Pyin Oo Lwin, I, mr.hotsia, recommend sharing a taxi with three others from Mandalay for no more than 500 baht. It’s very cost-effective because public buses take longer and are less convenient. I also took a taxi on the return trip for convenience and time-saving.

Another interesting option is taking the train from Pyin Oo Lwin to Hsipaw to see the famous and beautiful Gokteik Viaduct. I have taken this train myself; although it was both fun and tiring due to the crowded conditions requiring me to sit cramped for hours, the views along the route and the long bridge made it well worth the experience.

Accommodation and City Atmosphere

Pyin Oo Lwin has two main accommodation zones. The first is near the clock tower in the city center, popular with Western and Thai tourists because of its convenience and proximity to markets, restaurants, and shopping. I, mr.hotsia, stayed at Bravo Hotel next to the clock tower. It’s affordable at about 1,000 baht per night, with English-speaking owners and inexpensive laundry service. My favorite feature was the rooftop restaurant offering a 260-degree panoramic view of Pyin Oo Lwin, creating a fantastic atmosphere.

The second zone is near the National Kandawgyi Gardens, where larger hotels with spa and massage services are located. This area suits tourists with cars or those who prefer privacy. Many Westerners I met chose this zone for its peaceful atmosphere and easy access to sightseeing.

Food and Dining Atmosphere

Pyin Oo Lwin’s food scene is colorful due to the Indian cultural influence, with most restaurants focusing on tea and roti. However, there are also places serving Burmese and Chinese cuisine.

Restaurants I, mr.hotsia, recommend near the clock tower areRUBY RestaurantThis place looks nice and clean, but the taste wasn’t quite to my liking. Another restaurant I discovered later isDiamond Cage & RestaurantLocated on Mandalay-Lashio Road, the main street of Pyin Oo Lwin, this restaurant serves Thai, Chinese, and Burmese dishes. The flavors suit Thai tastes very well. Importantly, it has air conditioning, making it perfect for lunch or dinner after a full day of sightseeing.

It should be noted that many restaurants here are strict about alcohol consumption, but some make exceptions for tourists like us, understanding we are foreign guests.

Connection to the Ayeyarwady River and Nearby Cities

Pyin Oo Lwin is located in the Ayeyarwady Region, an important area of Myanmar. Besides interesting cities like Pyin Oo Lwin, there is the main Ayeyarwady River, which I have written about in other articles.Ayeyarwady River, MyanmarThis river is Myanmar’s lifeline, flowing through cities including Mandalay and Amarapura, which are not far from Pyin Oo Lwin.

If you want to change the atmosphere by visiting a riverside city like Pathein, I have articles recommendingEating in Pathein CityandLocal Cuisine of Pathein Cityas well as the fun experience of riding a trishaw around the city, offering a different but equally interesting local feel.

Summary of Pyin Oo Lwin Experience with mr.hotsia

For me, mr.hotsia, Pyin Oo Lwin is not just a small city on a cool plateau but a place full of historical stories, cultural diversity, and a lifestyle blending Burmese and Indian influences perfectly. Visiting here feels like traveling back in time to experience Myanmar during the British colonial era.

If you have a chance to visit Mandalay, don’t forget to set aside a day or two to stop by Pyin Oo Lwin. I guarantee you will have a unique and unforgettable experience, just like I did.
