Barbershops in Mandalay: Lifestyle and Personal Experiences with mr.hotsia
Mandalay, the second largest city in Myanmar, is a city with deep charm in the local lifestyle of its people. Besides walking around temples and local markets, one thing I, mr.hotsia, never miss when visiting is getting a haircut at a local barbershop, which is a unique and eye-opening experience for me.
I had the chance to stay at the Fortune Hotel, located in the heart of Mandalay. Just a short walk to the right after leaving the hotel, I found an open-air barbershop that reminded me of old public parks in Thailand decades ago. I saw about ten young barbers sitting in a row; some used scissors, others used razors for clean shaves. Haircuts here are not luxurious like in Bangkok or other big cities. There’s no shampooing, no air conditioning. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, more like chatting with neighbors than professional service.
These barbershops are called 'traditional' and are usually set under trees or by the roadside in communities. Barbers sit on simple wooden chairs and use small mirrors for customers to check their haircut during the process. I, mr.hotsia, appreciate this simplicity because it truly shows the lifestyle and relationships within the community.
Once, I tried a haircut at one of these shops in Mandalay. Although there was no shampoo service, the speed and skill of the barber left me very satisfied. Most of these shops offer simple haircuts, not focusing on fashion or complicated styles. They cut hair suitable for the climate and lifestyle of Burmese people who prefer neatness and cleanliness.
Besides traditional shops, Mandalay also has more formal barbershops with air conditioning and quality barber chairs. However, I, mr.hotsia, prefer the homely atmosphere because it allows me to experience the true lifestyle of the city's people up close.
If you have a chance to visit Mandalay, don’t forget to stroll around local communities or market areas after enjoyingAmarapura local cuisineand the warm lifestyle of Burmese people like me. Stopping by a local barbershop will be another experience that makes you feel like a real part of this city.
Differences of Barbershops in Myanmar and mr.hotsia’s Memories
From my travels across Southeast Asia, local barbershops in Myanmar have a very unique character, different from others in terms of atmosphere and service style. In Naypyidaw, I encountered barbershops offering shampoo and back massages, which impressed me greatly because the massage was very relaxing. However, such shops are not yet common in Mandalay.
For me, mr.hotsia, haircutting is not just a beauty activity but a way to deeply learn about the lifestyle of the people here. They talk about local news, daily life, and often kindly ask about the stories of foreigners like me.
Most barbers in these traditional shops are young people with good skills and dedication. They don’t work just for money but also to continue the traditional craft passed down in the community.
Connecting Experiences with Travel in Myanmar
Speaking of travel in Myanmar that I have written about before, such as riding a horse cart to see flower gardens in Pyin Oo Lwin (Horse Cart Ride in Pyin Oo Lwin, Pyin Oo Lwin Public Park) or tasting local food in Mithila (Food in Mithila, Myanmar), you can see that all activities are closely connected with the Burmese way of life.
Getting a haircut in Mandalay is the same. It opens the opportunity to see and experience the true lifestyle, not just material tourism but touching a local way of life that remains simple and warm impressively.
Advice for Travelers Interested in Trying Haircuts in Mandalay
For anyone wanting to try the local haircut experience in Mandalay, I, mr.hotsia, recommend preparing your mind for a simple atmosphere and unpretentious service but full of friendship and sincerity.
- Don’t expect shampooing or styling like barbershops in big cities because most shops just cut and finish.
- Affordable prices, mostly cheaper than hotel or upscale shops.

I, mr.hotsia, believe that good travel is not just about seeing beautiful places but truly understanding the local way of life. Barbershops in Mandalay are one of the doors that opened for me to experience that world.
