Backpacking India 1/129: Backpacking through 3 countries Thailand, Myanmar, India - Departing from Mae Sot to Kayin State, Myanmar

I, mr.hotsia, start a new journey with a large backpack and a heart ready for adventure. From Mae Sot, Tak Province, a familiar Thai border town, I travel into the land of Kayin State in Myanmar. This marks the beginning of a backpacking trip across 3 countries: Thailand, Myanmar, and India. This route is extraordinary because Kayin State in Myanmar is filled with authentic local lifestyles, peaceful nature, and warm people who strongly preserve their traditional culture.

Traveling from Mae Sot to Kayin State is not just about crossing borders but opening new experiences that challenge both body and mind. The route remains more natural than anywhere else. I chose to travel by foot and local buses to fully absorb the genuine atmosphere of the local people here. Often, we encounter small roadside markets filled with local products ranging from fresh vegetables and fruits to handwoven baskets and fabrics reflecting the lifestyle of the Kayin tribes.

The charm of Kayin State lies not only in nature but also in the culture and way of life of the locals. Here, mr.hotsia had the opportunity to talk with villagers and taste local dishes freshly prepared from local ingredients, such as sour curry with freshwater fish and traditionally cooked sticky rice, all while enjoying views of the endless rolling hills.

Connecting with the wonders of Kachin State

After spending some time in Kayin State, I, mr.hotsia, continued my journey to Kachin State, known as the birthplace of the Irrawaddy River, which I have previously written about.Exploring the Origin of the Irrawaddy River, Myitkyina, Kachin State, MyanmarHere, the highlight is Myitsone, where the Mekha and Mali rivers converge to form the source of the great Irrawaddy River. For traveling in Kachin State, mr.hotsia recommends renting a motorcycle for convenience and freedom to explore small villages along the way and the still pristine nature.

On the way to Myitsone, I stopped at villages of the Palaung and Red Tai people, who maintain a simple lifestyle full of friendliness and sincerity. Additionally, Kachin State is home to Indawgyi Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, which I have visited and described its beauty and biodiversity in an article.Indawgyiand more

Local lifestyle and must-try food

When talking about my travels in Myanmar, local food is an essential part. I once had breakfast by the market in Bagan, enjoying hot tea and a variety of Indian-style roti. There are also local restaurants that impressed me, such asShwe Yar Suwhich serves spicy Myanmar dishes along with refreshing Myanmar Beer Station. The chicken curry restaurant I found in Bagan is another spot mr.hotsia recommends trying.

Besides food, traveling by horse carriage in Bagan is a memorable experience. Although the route does not offer spectacular views, the atmosphere of riding an old carriage with dust swirling and the sound of hooves on the road feels like stepping back in time. I have shared this story and experience in an article.Horse Carriage Ride in Bagan, MyanmarThis is another charm of Myanmar that travelers should not miss.

How to prepare for backpacking through 3 countries comfortably and safely

Crossing the border from Mae Sot to Kayin State and continuing to India, I, mr.hotsia, recommend preparing thoroughly in all aspects—from travel documents to packing a suitably weighted bag, including dust protection gear and basic medicines. Some parts of the route remain natural and dusty. Also, be mentally ready to embrace new experiences in food, culture, and meeting local people.

Along this route, you will encounter diverse ethnic cultures in Myanmar—from the distinctive Kayin groups to the Red Tai and Kachin people in Kachin State, whose beauty and mystery are captivating. mr.hotsia invites everyone to travel with an open heart and a willingness to learn.
