Mitgina 10: Irrawaddy River Fish, Myanmar
When talking about Myanmar's main river, no one can ignorethe Irrawaddy River(Irrawaddy River) This river has flowed through the heart of Myanmar for over 2,000 kilometers and is the lifeblood for people in every region living along its banks. Today, mr.hotsia wants to take friends to explore the story of Irrawaddy River fish around Mitgina, where the Irrawaddy River originates from the confluence of the Mali Hka and Mekong Hka rivers inKachin StateMyanmar
Many might wonder what Irrawaddy River fish look like and why they attract travelers and natural researchers. I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to visit Mitgina and take a boat trip along the river to closely observe the lifestyle of locals who depend on nature and the river fish.
Journey to the Source of Mitgina to Experience Irrawaddy River Fish
Traveling to Mitgina is easier than you might think. I rented a motorcycle from my accommodation in Mitgina city for about 350 baht per day. Riding in the area requires wearing a helmet at all times for safety. The roads here are still dirt paths passing through small villages along the Irrawaddy River, allowing me to stop and chat with locals several times, which helped me understand their way of life more deeply.
The distance is about 40 kilometers from Mitgina city to the confluence of the Mekong Hka and Mali Hka rivers, known as “Myitsone.” This spot is considered the true origin of the Irrawaddy River. Here, I met locals using old wooden boats to catch various types of Irrawaddy River fish, especially large fish with distinctive features considered treasures of the local Myanmar people.
Symbolic Fish of the Irrawaddy River
The most prominent and famous fish in this river is the Irrawaddy River fish, sometimes called “Irrawaddy fish.” It resembles common freshwater fish but has a large head and wide mouth. The fish has firm flesh with a sweet and rich flavor, suitable for various dishes in Myanmar's culinary culture.
Besides that, there are other fish species caught by locals, such as the Hilsa fish, which is also important in this region. Although mostly found in Bangladesh and India, Hilsa fish is widely consumed in Myanmar as well. I have seen locals prepare Hilsa fish dishes with balanced flavors and Myanmar spices.
Lifestyle of Riverbank Villagers Along the Irrawaddy
What I enjoyed most about traveling here was seeing the daily life deeply connected to the Irrawaddy River. Locals still use small wooden boats to fish every morning. Some families practice traditional fishing and sell their catch in local markets, while others prepare fresh seafood dishes for passing tourists.
I, mr.hotsia, tried dishes made from Irrawaddy River fish in one village. The firm and sweet fish was simply prepared by grilling with salt or making Myanmar-style fish curry with local spices and herbs. It was a unique experience not easily found in big cities.
Connecting to Other Attractions in Kachin State
If you are interested in Myanmar's nature and culture, I recommend visitingIndawgyi Lakein Kachin State, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. Around it are Shan and Kachin villages with balanced agricultural lifestyles and nature conservation.
