Indawgyi Myanmar 12/46: This girl can slash fish in clusters with a single sword INDAWGYI fishing girl

When talking about one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia, the nameIndawgyi Lakein Kachin State, Myanmar, immediately comes to mind. With a width of 13 kilometers and a length of 24 kilometers, this lake is not only an important nature reserve but also a source of life and community livelihood for the Tai Daeng and Kachin people living around the lake in over 20 villages.

Once, I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to take a small boat out to experience the atmosphere by Indawgyi Lake. Amidst the cool breeze and soft morning sunlight, the scent of freshwater and surrounding trees created an indescribable freshness. What impressed me most on this trip was not just the natural beauty but the image of a young girl holding a single sword, skillfully slashing fish swimming in the water. Her gaze was as focused as a warrior on the battlefield, but her goal was to catch fish in clusters — a sight I had never seen anywhere else.

That girl is one of the villagers living by Indawgyi Lake. She and her family live simply, practicing fishing and farming in the traditional ways of the Tai Daeng and Kachin people. The fish slashing method I witnessed is a traditional technique passed down through generations. Her agility and precision made me think that this is another symbol of true strength and a deep bond with nature.

Indawgyi Lake is located in the Mohnyin administrative district of Kachin State, not far from the source of the Irrawaddy River at Myitsone, which I have described in a previous article.Travel to the Source of the Irrawaddy River, Myitsone, Kachin StateTraveling to Indawgyi is not easy because the route remains natural and challenging. But for those who love adventure and want to experience authentic community life, I, mr.hotsia, affirm that Indawgyi is a destination not to be missed.

I still remember sitting on the boat touring the lake, seeing people in the small riverside villages living traditionally. Small wooden kayaks floated on the water, girls and children helped catch fish, and the sound of laughter and simple conversations made me feel as if I had entered another world untouched by the chaos of big cities.

Besides fishing, locals in this area also practice agriculture combined with forest and wildlife conservation in the Indawgyi Lake area, which was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1999. Seeing rare birds and mammals roaming freely nearby is something you won't easily find elsewhere.

If you want to visit Indawgyi like I did, you should prepare an open heart for learning and new experiences, as well as endurance for travel that may not be as comfortable as in big cities. But the natural beauty and sincerity of the locals here will be precious gifts you will take home.

For those interested in the stories of the Tai Daeng and Kachin people, as well as the atmosphere around Indawgyi Lake, I recommend following my articles atIndawgyiandKachin Stateto better understand the context and community lifestyle in this area.
