Myitkyina 12: Eating authentic Kachin food that looks like this Kachin local food Myitsone Myitkyina
For those who follow my work, mr.hotsia, you probably know that I like to delve deeply into authentic lifestyles and local food. Today, I take you to Myitkyina, the main city of Kachin State, Myanmar, which is about 40 kilometers from the source of the Irrawaddy River at Myitsone. This land is full of genuine Kachin culture and local food so delicious it must be shared.
First, I must say that traveling from Myitkyina to Myitsone, I recommend renting a motorcycle from your hotel, which is affordable at about 350 baht per day. Riding in this city requires wearing a helmet at all times. The feeling of riding a motorcycle surrounded by nature and the countryside of Kachin State made me feel more connected to the atmosphere. Importantly, along the way, you can stop at small villages to experience local life and taste local food.
Myitkyina and Myitsone are areas where the Mali and N'Mai rivers converge, forming the main source of the Irrawaddy River, Myanmar’s most important river for culture and economy. Imagine tasting food by this great river with a long historical background — it’s an experience hard to find elsewhere.
The authentic Kachin food I tried in Myitkyina is diverse and richly flavored, with truly rustic appearances. It’s not decorated for looks but focuses on deliciousness and freshness, such as hot sticky rice paired with fish curry made from fresh freshwater fish from the Irrawaddy River, or grilled pork with herbs emitting an enticing aroma. There are also fresh vegetable dishes from local organic farming in villages around Myitkyina.
One thing I clearly noticed is the simplicity of eating here. Kachin people prefer food made from genuine local ingredients with minimal processing. Some meals included soft homemade bread dipped in a special sauce made from fresh chili and local herbs, or hot steamed sticky rice served with pickled vegetables and salty meat with a balanced flavor that made me order several more plates.
Besides food, the local market in Myitkyina is very interesting. It’s a hub for fresh vegetables, fruits, fish, and local spices not found in big cities. I, mr.hotsia, walked around and talked with vendors there and saw how Kachin people firmly preserve their traditional cooking and trading culture.
If anyone is interested in in-depth stories about Kachin State as the context of Myitkyina, you can check outKachin Statewhich I have fully written about geography, lifestyle, and the Irrawaddy River’s source. For those who like the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, I recommend reading the articleIndawgyiwhich is not far from Myitkyina and home to many Red Thai and Kachin people.
Another topic I want to recommend for those who like Burmese food is a comparison with food in other cities like Bagan (Pagan), which I have written about inFood in Bagan, Pagan, MyanmarThere, the food is more diverse and suitable for tourists, but if you want the authentic taste of the Kachin people, Myitkyina is the answer you should not miss.
From my perspective, mr.hotsia, eating authentic Kachin food with this appearance and flavor is a new experience that deepens understanding of the culture and lifestyle of the Kachin people. Here, it’s not just about eating but about experiencing the way of life and the deep connection with nature that remains pure.
Finally, I want to invite everyone to open their hearts and travel to Myitkyina and Myitsone themselves. Rent a motorcycle and ride along rural roads, stop to taste food at small shops where the owners cook with their own hands, and you will realize that food not found on big menus in fancy restaurants can sometimes be much more delicious and charming.
