Indawgyi Myanmar 13/46: Life by Indawgyi Lake 1/3 Fishing for Breakfast with Locals
Indawgyi Lake is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia, located in Kachin State, Myanmar. Just hearing the name evokes a sense of tranquility and untouched nature here. I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to experience the real life of locals living by Indawgyi Lake, which was a profound experience rarely found elsewhere.
That morning, I woke up early to go fishing with the locals here. Their lifestyle remains simple and deeply connected to the lake. Small wooden boats were paddled across the water. Faces and hands darkened by sun and water reflected the strength and endurance needed to survive each day. The fish caught in this lake are not only a food source but also an integral part of a long-standing way of life and culture.
Indawgyi Lake is about 13 kilometers wide and over 24 kilometers long. Around the lake are more than 20 small villages, mostly inhabited by Tai Red or Shan people and Kachin who have settled here for a long time. Most villagers rely on agriculture and fishing, and I witnessed fishing methods that are simple yet full of skill and knowledge passed down through generations.
As the boat slowly drifted over the water reflecting the golden morning sunlight, I spoke with a local named Aung. He told me, "Fishing in this lake is not just about finding food, but about preserving the way of life and the relationship with nature here." I felt deeply moved because it was not just tourism, but a real learning and understanding of the lives of the people here.
Besides fishing, there is a small market around the lake where locals sell what they catch and grow. This gave me the chance to taste fresh local food with flavors unlike anything I had before. It was clear that freshness and simplicity of ingredients are the heart of the cuisine here, as I have written in my articles.Tai Red Food, Indawgyi Lake, Kachin State, Indawgyi Lake MyanmarDescribing the diversity and flavors of local dishes in this region
Traveling to Indawgyi Lake is not easy. I chose to rent a motorcycle from Myitkyina city, about 40 kilometers away. Riding through rural routes filled with mountain views and vast fields allowed me to truly experience the atmosphere of Kachin State. For those interested in deep nature and culture of Myanmar, I recommend reading my previous stories aboutKachin Statewhich I have written before.
During the morning boat trip with locals, I saw simple but effective fishing tools like fish traps and nets woven from natural materials. The community’s cooperation showed unity and mutual reliance. Some villagers shared that the fish caught are distributed within the community to ensure everyone has enough food. This reflects a way of life I believe we today should learn from and bring back.
After fishing, I had the chance to eat breakfast with locals by the lake. The atmosphere was simple but full of warmth. Breakfast included freshly grilled local fish with sticky rice and fresh vegetables from the backyard garden. The taste of grilled fish remains in my memory to this day. It was not just about food but about the strong bond between people and nature present in every aspect of life here.
If you want a truly different and profound travel experience, visiting Indawgyi Lake in Kachin State is an answer not to be missed. Besides learning about local life, you will see the beauty of nature and biodiversity well preserved. This place is one of the destinations I, mr.hotsia, am proud to present.
