Magnificent Shinbyu in Myitkyina: The Novice Ordination Ceremony of Kachin State

My journey with mr.hotsia to Myitkyina inKachin StateMyanmar. This time it was not just ordinary tourism but an opportunity to experience the ancient ritual of Shinbyu, the novice ordination ceremony, held grandly in a small town that deeply preserves the beauty of traditional culture and beliefs.

Myitkyina, a city located on the banks of the Irrawaddy River, the source of this important river, is a cultural crossroads for the Kachin people and other ethnic groups in Kachin State. I arrived here during the community's preparation for the novice ordination ceremony, a deeply meaningful event in the lives of Burmese and Kachin people. The town was filled with people in colorful traditional costumes and the lively sounds of drums and pipes throughout the day.

Shinbyu Kachin Ceremony: A Vibrant Novice Ordination

The novice ordination in Myitkyina is distinctly different from other places because it is a grand celebration. Villagers of all ages gather to encourage and support the boys through this important milestone. I witnessed a parade where boys dressed in golden outfits adorned with beautiful accessories, accompanied by traditional performances and music that created a warm and reverent atmosphere.

During the ceremony, I spoke with many locals who shared the significance of Shinbyu as a rite of passage for boys entering a new life according to Buddhist principles. It also strengthens community bonds. This event is an opportunity for families and relatives to express love and connection by participating together.

Journey to Myitsone: The Source of the Irrawaddy River

After the ceremony, I spent free time riding a motorcycle to explore important natural sites in Kachin State, namely Myitsone, the famous source of the Irrawaddy River. The trip from Myitkyina to Myitsone takes about 1 hour, covering approximately 40 kilometers. I recommend renting a motorcycle to fully enjoy the roadside atmosphere and stop by small villages along the way.

At Myitsone, the Mali Hka and Mekha rivers converge to form the headwaters of the Irrawaddy River, the lifeblood of Myanmar. I stood watching the morning water flow, breathing in the pure and peaceful natural air rarely found in big cities. Being here reminded me of the relationship between humans and nature, clearly reflected in the lifestyle of the Kachin people.

Lifestyle and Local Food in Myitkyina

After experiencing the ceremony and nature, I did not miss tasting local food at the market in Myitkyina. The food here is simple but full of flavor, such as hot sticky rice served with curry fragrant with Burmese spices blended with Kachin tastes. There are also Burmese tea shops and local desserts to try.

Talking with market vendors helped me understand the lifestyle of the people here better. Whether recommending places to visit or sharing daily stories, everything felt simple yet impressive. I, mr.hotsia, consider the food and lifestyle here as another charm that makes Myitkyina uniquely special in Myanmar.

Connecting Experiences with Kachin State and Indawgyi Lake

When talking about Kachin State, the image I experienced is not limited to Myitkyina alone but also includes nearby attractions such asIndawgyi Lake(Indawgyi), the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. It is rich in natural abundance and home to many rare bird species. Visiting Indawgyi Lake truly complements this trip perfectly.

Although I only had the chance to experience Myitkyina and the Shinbyu ceremony, this experience gave me a clearer overall picture of Kachin State in terms of culture, lifestyle, people, and nature that remains remarkably pure.

Summary of Experience by mr.hotsia

For anyone wanting to experience the sincerity of people and traditional culture in Myanmar far from main tourist areas, Myitkyina in Kachin State is an unmissable answer. The Shinbyu ceremony I witnessed is not just a religious ritual but a life experience teaching the meaning of new beginnings and community bonds.

This journey made me, mr.hotsia, feel as if I truly touched the "heart" of Myanmar in a unique way. I recommend everyone who loves cultural travel to open their hearts and experience it themselves. I guarantee you will be deeply impressed.
