Indawgyi Myanmar 17/46: Rain and Fish Rising from Indawgyi Lake, Traditional Fishing Methods

I, mr.hotsia, recently had the opportunity to visit Indawgyi Lake, located in Kachin State, Myanmar. This is not only one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia but also a natural area rich with the lifestyles and cultures of the Shan and Kachin ethnic groups living around the lake.

During my visit, it was drizzling, creating a fresh and cool atmosphere. Villagers in small lakeside communities were preparing their gear to go fishing. I, mr.hotsia, followed along excitedly because the fishing method here is unlike anywhere else in the world. It is a very traditional and classic technique – villagers use their hands and nets to drag fish from the lake, where the water is still slightly murky from the recent rain.

Indawgyi Lake is approximately 13 kilometers wide from east to west and about 24 kilometers long from north to south. Around the lake, there are over 20 villages inhabited mainly by the Red Tai (Shan) and Kachin ethnic groups. This area is designated as the Indawgyi Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 1999, covering more than 780 square kilometers. It is home to many rare wildlife and bird species. If you enjoy birdwatching, renting a boat from lakeside guesthouses is a great option.

I, mr.hotsia, remember sitting and watching the gentle rain while villagers fished in the lake. It felt like traveling back to my childhood home, experiencing a traditional way of life still closely connected to nature.

Lifestyle and Culture in the Villages around Indawgyi Lake

Most villages around Indawgyi Lake are agricultural communities maintaining traditional lifestyles. Villagers live simply, farming rice, raising animals, and fishing from the lake to support their families. Morning and evening were my favorite times to walk around the villages to soak in the atmosphere and chat with locals.

The local cuisine here is very interesting. The Red Tai and Kachin people have traditional dishes using ingredients from the lake and surrounding forests, such as freshly caught river fish prepared in curries or grilled, along with sticky rice and local vegetables. I once tried food in one village; the flavors were fresh and rich, very different from city restaurants.

Travel and Tips for Tourists

Traveling to Indawgyi Lake is not easy, but the challenges are rewarded by the natural beauty and warm hospitality of the locals. I, mr.hotsia, recommend preparing well, especially rainproof clothing and shoes suitable for muddy trails, as paths can be slippery and messy during the rainy season.

Accommodations here are small guesthouses run by local villagers, affordable and friendly in atmosphere. There are also boat rental services for birdwatching and close exploration of the lake. If you love nature photography and wildlife, Indawgyi is your paradise.
