Indawgyi Myanmar 20/46: Burmese Motorcycle Enthusiasts Wrap Chains Around Wheels to Master Mud Riding indawgyi motorcycle

When it comes to two-wheel adventures at Indawgyi in Kachin State, Myanmar, nothing is as thrilling as watching the local Burmese motorcycle enthusiasts here. The muddy trail full of potholes and uneven hills is a true test ground for the exceptional skills of local riders. I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to experience this atmosphere firsthand. I must say, the mud riding experience at Indawgyi is unlike anywhere else because here, Burmese riders use a special technique of wrapping chains around their wheels to increase traction and expertly control their bikes through thick mud like true masters.

Indawgyi, or Indawgyi Lake, is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, located in Mohnyin District of Kachin State (read more aboutKachin State). The lake is approximately 13 kilometers wide and 24 kilometers long. Around the lake, more than 20 villages of Shan (Tai Yai) and Kachin people live. The locals here still lead simple lives deeply connected to nature.

To explore around Indawgyi Lake, I rented a motorcycle from a small guesthouse in a nearby village for about 350 Thai Baht per day, which was reasonable for experiencing the local lifestyle and beautiful natural routes. During my visit, local riders had fully customized their bikes, including wrapping chains around the wheels to conquer thick mud and adjusting shock absorbers for the rough terrain. This clearly showed the passion and dedication Burmese riders at Indawgyi have for their motorcycles.

Although the muddy trails at Indawgyi may seem dangerous for typical tourists, for the local motorcycle enthusiasts, it is a challenging arena requiring high skill and endurance. I, mr.hotsia, tried riding through some muddy sections and immediately realized that without chains wrapped around the wheels or real expertise, it would be easy to lose control. Another impressive aspect was the cooperation of local villagers who helped push bikes and guided riders through difficult shortcuts, showing true friendship and unity among the people here.

Besides the excitement of the mud riding arena, Indawgyi is also an important wildlife conservation area, home to rare birds and mammals that are hard to find elsewhere in Southeast Asia. This lake is not just a playground for riders but also an attractive nature tourism spot for bird watchers and nature lovers. You can rent a boat from the guesthouse to go birdwatching in the early morning or evening, which I personally tried. The peaceful atmosphere and fresh natural environment made me feel fully recharged.

If you want to challenge yourself like the Burmese motorcycle enthusiasts, come to Indawgyi and experience something unique. I, mr.hotsia, recommend preparing both physically and mentally, as well as bringing proper gear for mud riding because the roads here are definitely not smooth like in big cities.

For tourists interested in learning about the culture and lifestyle of the Shan and Kachin people in this area, I suggest visiting the villages around Indawgyi Lake that still strongly preserve traditional Burmese ways. Talking with locals, tasting local food, or even learning traditional farming methods will enrich your journey.
