Indawgyi Myanmar 21/46: Swoon! Falling in Love with the Betel Seller Nong Pantasin - West Indawgyi Exploration Trip

If you are seeking a travel experience filled with the beauty of nature and the charm of authentic local life, Indawgyi in Kachin State, Myanmar is a destination not to be missed. mr.hotsia has just returned from an exploration trip to West Indawgyi Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia, spanning over 13 kilometers wide and 24 kilometers long. The lake is surrounded by Tai Yai and Kachin villages that steadfastly preserve their traditional way of life.

Getting here is not easy, but for me, it was a worthwhile adventure. Starting from renting a motorcycle in Mohnyin city, heading towards the lake through routes filled with mountains and quiet villages, I had the chance to talk with Nong Pantasin, a charming local betel seller by the roadside. She represents a simple yet warm way of life. Sitting and chatting under the shade by the lake, I was almost swooned by her sincere smile and gaze.

Indawgyi Lake is not only beautiful with its water and surrounding mountains but also an important wildlife sanctuary in Myanmar. It is home to various bird species and endangered mammals that we could observe up close. Taking a boat ride to enjoy the lake view in the gentle morning sunlight was the most impressive moment for me. The peace and purity of nature here made me forget the hustle and bustle of the big city for a while.

During the trip, I also visited Tai Yai villages around the lake, where sustainable agricultural lifestyles are practiced. The locals still use their native language and firmly maintain their traditions. Although some tourists visit, the naturalness and authenticity of the community remain intact.

If you are interested in learning more about Indawgyi and the Kachin State region, I recommend reading the articleKachin Statethat I wrote earlier, which will help you better understand the travel context and cultural background of this area.

The Charm of Life by Indawgyi Lake

Besides the beautiful nature, what impressed me equally was the lifestyle of the lakeside villagers. Indawgyi is home to many ethnic groups, with the main ones being the Tai Yai and Kachin people, who have distinctive clothing, culture, and language. I had the chance to taste simple local dishes made by the villagers, such as sticky rice, grilled pork, and a spicy local chili paste that suited my Thai palate very well.

At a small market by the lake, I met Nong Pantasin again as a fresh betel seller, beloved by both locals and tourists. Buying betel from her was not just a transaction but an exchange of smiles and touching life stories. I believe this simplicity is what truly made me “swoon.”

Travel and Tips from mr.hotsia

For travelers wanting to visit Indawgyi, I recommend heading from Mohnyin city by renting a motorcycle or car, as the route is quite challenging and requires caution, especially on some dirt roads. Preparing with a helmet and dust protection gear is very important.

I suggest staying in small villages by the lake to experience the genuine local atmosphere. Don’t forget to allow time for nature walks around here. There are several homestays warmly welcoming tourists where you can enjoy freshly made food from local ingredients and have close conversations with the locals.
