Indawgyi Myanmar 22/46: Gathering to eat with locals, exploration trip to Inndawgyi Village by Indawgyi Lake

When talking about Myanmar beyond just Bagan or Mandalay, Indawgyi Lake is a place that mr.hotsia would like to recommend to keep on your list. For those who love nature and experiencing authentic local lifestyles, Indawgyi Lake in Kachin State is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia. It is located in Mohnyin District of Kachin State, Myanmar. This place is not only naturally beautiful but also full of stories of the Shan and Kachin ethnic communities living around the lake.

When mr.hotsia had the opportunity to visit here, exploring Inndawgyi Village by Indawgyi Lake was a very valuable experience. Inndawgyi Village is a small village built by the lakeside with a peaceful atmosphere, vast waters stretching as far as the eye can see, and people still living simply, mainly farming and fishing. Gathering to eat with the locals here made mr.hotsia feel like traveling back in time to truly experience the traditional way of life.

Lifestyle by Indawgyi Lake: Simple beauty to behold

Indawgyi Lake is over 24 kilometers long and about 13 kilometers wide. Around the lake, there are more than 20 villages scattered along the shoreline, mostly inhabited by the Shan ethnic group, also known as Red Shan, as well as the Kachin people who have their own unique culture. Every day, villagers go out to catch local fish and tend to their farms. Sitting down to talk with them is not difficult due to their friendliness and openness to tourists who want to learn about their real lives.

mr.hotsia tried rowing a boat to Inndawgyi Village, which was a very peaceful and beautiful journey. Along the way, many bird species were seen flying around, especially in January. This area is home to several rare bird species such as the Greylag Goose and the Lesser Whistling Duck, making it ideal for bird and nature photography enthusiasts.

Gathering to eat with locals: Genuine food and friendship

One of the most impressive experiences for mr.hotsia was sitting around to eat with a local family in Inndawgyi. Hot steamed rice was served with Burmese dishes focusing on ingredients from the lake and nearby vegetable gardens, such as salt-grilled Indawgyi fish, local vegetable curry, and chili paste made from fresh chili and garlic. The aroma of the food combined with the lakeside atmosphere made the meal warm and friendly.

mr.hotsia talked with the homeowner and learned that the locals here still preserve their traditional way of life despite the many changes in the outside world. Most of them rely on agriculture and fishing, and there is also traditional handicraft work passed down through generations.

Travel and advice for travelers

For tourists interested in experiencing Indawgyi, traveling here may not be as convenient as main tourist cities like Bagan or Mandalay. However, this difficulty is part of the charm of the adventure. mr.hotsia recommends preparing in advance by renting a motorcycle or hiring a car from nearby towns such as Mohnyin or even Myitkyina, which is the travel hub of Kachin State.Kachin StateFamous as the origin of the Irrawaddy River

Staying in lakeside villages will allow you to experience a closer connection. Some villages offer homestays with local food and opportunities to learn authentic Shan culture.

Connect experiences with other Myanmar travels
