Indawgyi Myanmar 24/46: Visiting Homes, Cooking Together, Drinking Tea, and Experiencing the Tai Daeng Way of Life at Longkok Village, Indawgyi Lake, Kachin State, Myanmar
When talking about one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia, the nameIndawgyi Lake(Indawgyi Lake) in Kachin State, Myanmar, undoubtedly ranks among the top in my mind. Indawgyi is not just an ordinary lake; it is like the heart of the Tai Daeng community living around this lake. I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to experience the true lifestyle of the locals here at Longkok Village, a small village by the lake, where I visited homes, cooked together, drank tea, and had a unique experience not easily found elsewhere.
My journey to Indawgyi Lake was not easy. The lake is located in Mohnyin district of Kachin State, where roads are not as developed as in big cities. The trip involved traveling on dirt roads and winding mountain paths. But all the fatigue disappeared when I saw the vast lake stretching over 24 kilometers from north to south and 13 kilometers from east to west. Mother Nature warmly welcomed me with a smile.
Most locals here are Tai Daeng, also known as "Shan," who have their own unique culture and language different from other Burmese people. I had the chance to talk and exchange stories with them. They live simply by farming and fishing in Indawgyi Lake. The peaceful atmosphere, free from the noise of big cities, allowed me to truly experience the natural environment and traditional way of life.
One unforgettable impression was the evening I sat around drinking tea with a Tai Daeng family at Longkok Village. Sitting together drinking tea was not just about the tea itself but sharing life stories, laughter, and building relationships. I tasted excellent tea brewed from locally grown leaves, with a fragrant and mellow flavor that reminded me of the warmth of home without realizing it.
The food here is simple but impressive. I tried curry made from local herbs and fresh vegetables freshly picked from the farm, as well as very fresh freshwater fish from Indawgyi Lake. The flavors combine sweetness, richness, and sourness perfectly. Every bite made me feel like I was tasting the true flavors of northern Myanmar that many might not have known before.
Indawgyi Lake is not only important to the Tai Daeng community but also a significant wildlife sanctuary in Myanmar. Covering over 780 square kilometers, it is home to many rare animals, including more than 10 endangered bird species. I once took a boat tour to watch birds early in the morning at the lake. The peaceful atmosphere filled with bird songs made me feel like I had entered another world far from the hustle of big cities.
If you are interested in nature and culture, I recommend reading more aboutKachin Statewhich is an area rich in ethnic and cultural diversity. It is the origin of the Irrawaddy River, which holds historical and natural significance for Myanmar. Visiting Indawgyi Lake is like experiencing two worlds perfectly blended together.
For traveling to Indawgyi Lake, I recommend preparing for travel on imperfect roads and having a local guide to ensure safety and a deeper understanding of the local way of life. Accommodation around the lake remains simple, with local guesthouses mostly focusing on a peaceful and friendly atmosphere.
If you love truly natural places, enjoy experiencing traditional local lifestyles, and want to escape the chaos of big cities, Indawgyi, Kachin State, is a choice I, mr.hotsia, recommend without hesitation. Here you will find the beauty of a large lake intertwined with the stories of the Tai Daeng people who have remarkably preserved their way of life.
