Indawgyi Myanmar 26/46: Revealing the Burmese Omelette Recipe by Nong Meta, the Daughter of the Motorbike Rider Who Took Me Touring Indawgyi
When talking about Indawgyi Lake, many might think of the natural beauty and tranquility that is hard to find in today's world. But for me, mr.hotsia, my latest visit here was more than just enjoying beautiful views or birdwatching rare species. It became a deeper experience because I got to know Nong Meta, the daughter of the motorbike rider who took me around the lake, and she revealed the unique secret recipe of authentic Burmese omelette unlike any other.
Indawgyi Lake is located in Kachin State in northern Myanmar. It is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, 13 kilometers wide and 24 kilometers long. Around the lake are villages of Shan and Kachin ethnic groups who live by traditional farming and fishing. The landscape and environment here remain impressively beautiful and pristine.Indawgyi LakeIt has also been declared a wildlife sanctuary to protect many rare birds and animals. It is a birdwatcher's paradise not to be missed when visiting Kachin State.
This time I had the chance to ride a motorbike with Nong Meta, the daughter of the bike owner. She took me winding along the lake to various villages hidden among lush green forests. Remarkably, along the way, Nong Meta did not forget to share local food knowledge by offering me her regularly made "Burmese omelette" to taste.
Burmese Omelette Unlike Any Omelette You've Ever Had
The Burmese omelette is special because it includes aromatic local spices and herbs. The preparation is simple but has a unique flavor. Nong Meta told me, "The Burmese omelette must be fluffy and soft, use plenty of oil, and add fried shallots and fresh chili to enhance fragrance and a slight spiciness." After tasting it, I must say it is very different from omelettes I've had in Thailand. The flavor is balanced, slightly spicy, and fragrant with fresh herbs. It reminded me of street food I once tried inMyitkyinaor at the riverside market in Pathein where I have been before.
Eating a Burmese omelette made by a local like Nong Meta in the simple lakeside atmosphere of Indawgyi is completely different from eating at tourist restaurants. At least this dish tells a story of the lifestyle, identity, and care in every detail of the people here very clearly.
Life by Indawgyi Lake with a Simple Local Way of Living
Traveling around Indawgyi Lake with Nong Meta allowed me to see the simple yet joyful daily life of the locals. There are no tall buildings or paved roads like big cities here. Most travel is still done by motorbike or traditional boats to connect between villages. I stopped by a small village market where locals sold fresh vegetables, fruits, and local food. It felt like stepping back in time to real rural life.
For those interested in experiencing this nature and culture, I recommend renting a motorbike from accommodations in Myitkyina city, which is not far from Indawgyi Lake. Riding a motorbike around the lake lets you truly feel the atmosphere of Kachin State. And don't forget to always wear a helmet as required by local law.

When Local Food Becomes a Bridge of Hearts
For me, mr.hotsia, this trip to Indawgyi was not just about sightseeing or photographing beautiful nature, but about opening my heart to learn the lifestyle and culture through food. Nong Meta represented this profound story impressively. From the small plate of omelette she made for me, it became an unforgettable experience.
If you want to experience Myanmar from a unique perspective, try going off the beaten path and visit Indawgyi. This is not just an ordinary lake but a gateway to the world of Myanmar people who still preserve their identity beautifully and warmly.
