Indawgyi Myanmar 28/46: Eating Indawgyi Fried Rice in Kachin State

I am mr.hotsia and this is one of the profound experiences of traveling toIndawgyior Indawgyi Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia, located in Mohnyin District of Kachin State, Myanmar. This is not just an ordinary lake but a source of life and culture for the Tai Yai and Kachin people living around the lake in over 20 villages.

I had the opportunity to taste a signature local dish called “Indawgyi Fried Rice,” a simple yet powerful dish that truly reflects the lifestyle of the people here. This fried rice is full of fresh local ingredients including fresh vegetables, river fish, and spices carefully prepared by the villagers. Stir-fried until fragrant, it offers a unique traditional flavor. I traveled to lakeside villages that still preserve their traditional way of life, saw locals fishing naturally, and they used those ingredients to cook this fried rice for me to try.

Visiting Indawgyi is not just about eating fried rice but also experiencing the peaceful and stunning natural atmosphere around the lake. The lake stretches 13 kilometers east to west and 24 kilometers north to south, situated about 166 meters above sea level. It is home to diverse wildlife and many rare bird species, declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1999. I once took a boat ride to watch flocks of birds flying over the lake at dawn, seeing large groups of Greylag geese and openbill storks—a truly unforgettable sight.

Lifestyle and Local Food at Indawgyi

The lifestyle of villagers around Indawgyi Lake remains simple and mainly dependent on nature. I spoke with elderly locals who shared about their daily farming and fishing routines. This simplicity is reflected in their food, whether it’s the Indawgyi Fried Rice I ate or dishes made from freshly caught fish from the lake.

Each village has a small morning market where locals gather to sell produce from their gardens and streams. Fresh green vegetables, small fish, and local spices like ginger, galangal, and chili are sold. Seeing the market atmosphere here, it’s clear that traveling is not just about stopping to eat but deeply experiencing the real life of the people here.

For tourists who enjoy challenges, renting a motorcycle to ride around Indawgyi Lake and the surrounding villages is a great option. I used this method myself because it’s convenient and allows me to stop to enjoy beautiful views and easily talk with locals.

Indawgyi Fried Rice Trip: A Memorable Experience

When I finally ate Indawgyi Fried Rice, I felt it was a dish full of intention and stories from the cook. It’s a flavor unlike any fried rice I’ve had before. The aroma of spices blended with fish from the lake and fresh vegetables made this dish my favorite on this trip.

Eating Indawgyi Fried Rice by the lakeside with views of mountains and small villages around gave me a feeling truly connected to nature and culture. It was as if this dish told the story of Indawgyi and Kachin State with every bite.

If anyone has the chance to visit Myanmar’s Kachin State, don’t forget to stop byIndawgyiand try Indawgyi Fried Rice at least once. I guarantee it will be a unique experience and will make you fall in love with the local lifestyle and food here just like me, mr.hotsia.
