Myitkyina 3: Journey to the Source of the Irrawaddy River in Kachin State, Myanmar

For me, mr.hotsia, traveling to Myitkyina in Kachin State, Myanmar, was an experience full of excitement and a deep feeling of connection with the true nature and local culture. Myitkyina is not just an ordinary town but the starting point of the Irrawaddy River, the main river vital to this region. I had the opportunity to experience and document this journey closely from the field to share with you.

The Source of the Irrawaddy River at Myitsone

When talking about the Irrawaddy River, many may know it as the long river flowing through Myanmar, serving as the lifeline for people across the country. But for me, visitingKachin Stateand heading to the village of Myitkyina, this is the crucial point where the Mali and N'Mai rivers converge at a place called “Myitsone,” the true source of the Irrawaddy River.

The journey from Myitkyina town to Myitsone takes about 1 hour, covering approximately 40 kilometers. I chose to rent a motorcycle from the hotel at about 350 baht per day. Riding a motorcycle here requires caution and always wearing a helmet because some roads are quite rough and dusty. Along the way, I stopped at small villages filled with the simple lifestyle of the Kachin people, especially children playing by the roadside and locals who still live traditionally and firmly.

Lifestyle and Culture of the Kachin People in Myitkyina

Upon arriving in Myitkyina, what impressed me was the peaceful atmosphere and natural charm of this small town. Most Kachin people engage in small-scale farming and fishing for their livelihood. The local market offers fresh natural products such as vegetables, fruits, and local dishes to try. I tasted simple local food full of flavor, especially curry made with local herbs and fish from the Irrawaddy River, a unique delicious experience.

Additionally, I spoke with many locals who shared the importance of the Irrawaddy River in their lives, including its use for agriculture, transportation, and as a vital food source.

Nature and Beautiful Views Along the Irrawaddy River

Watching the evening view along the Irrawaddy River in Myitkyina is an experience I want everyone to feel. The wide river flows gently, with forests and high mountains on both sides, reflecting the beauty of nature that remains pure and intact. Seeing local wooden boats sailing and villagers engaging in riverside activities made me feel like stepping back into a simple and peaceful life.

Connecting Experiences with Nearby Places

If you are interested in nature and eco-tourism, I recommend extending your trip from Myitkyina to Indawgyi Lake, also located in Kachin State. This freshwater lake, the largest in Southeast Asia, is important as a wildlife sanctuary and home to many bird species. If you love birdwatching or enjoy boat trips to see nature,Indawgyi Lakeis a destination not to be missed.

Also, if you have enjoyed the food in Myanmar cities like Bagan or Pagan, I have written notes inFood in Bagan Pagan Myanmarwhich offers another perspective of travel that brings joy to food-loving travelers like me, mr.hotsia.

Travel Tips

Visiting Myitkyina and the Irrawaddy River source is not as difficult as you might think but requires good preparation, especially for travel. I recommend renting a motorcycle with a helmet and being careful of slippery or rough roads in some sections, as road conditions in Kachin State are not fully developed. Also, prepare clothing suitable for the weather and always carry drinking water.

For accommodation in Myitkyina, there are several simple options, but if you prefer a peaceful atmosphere close to nature, I suggest choosing a hotel near the river to wake up to beautiful river views in the morning.
