Indawgyi Myanmar 34/46: Enchanted by Two Red Tai Sisters, Nong Mia Mian San and Pinang 1/4 Cooking Traditional Red Tai Desserts
When mr.hotsia had the opportunity to travel to Indawgyi Lake in Kachin State, Myanmar, what captivated was not only the natural beauty surrounding one of Southeast Asia's largest lakes but also the charm of the two Red Tai sisters whom mr.hotsia met and had the chance to cook traditional Red Tai desserts with, a rare experience nowadays.
Indawgyi Lake is located in Mohnyin district of Kachin State. This area is home to the Red Tai and Kachin people who live simply amidst abundant nature. Around the lake are more than 20 villages, and mr.hotsia visited one village where warm people and well-preserved culture remain.
Two Red Tai Sisters and Their Cultural Bond
At a village by Indawgyi Lake, mr.hotsia met two Red Tai sisters, Nong Mia Mian San and Pinang. They live in a simple wooden house full of warmth and smiles. The sisters invited mr.hotsia into their small kitchen to learn how to make traditional Red Tai desserts, which resemble Thai sweets but have unique ingredients and preparation methods.
Making Red Tai desserts starts with selecting quality rice flour mixed with brown sugar and fresh coconut milk prepared by the villagers. Then the mixture is steamed in traditional bamboo steamers. The entire process is slow, done skillfully by hand with love for their culture. mr.hotsia watched and helped knead the dough, feeling the connection of lifestyle and culture passed down through generations.
Life by Indawgyi Lake and Its Natural Diversity
Indawgyi Lake is not only a vast freshwater source but also an important wildlife sanctuary. It is a habitat for many rare bird species, especially in January when Greylag geese and bar-headed geese come close for viewing. mr.hotsia recommends renting a boat from local guesthouses to fully enjoy the unique atmosphere and nature.
Traveling to Indawgyi Lake is convenient by renting a motorcycle from nearby towns in Kachin State, such as Myitkyina, the source of the Irrawaddy River, which mr.hotsia has visited before.Kachin StateAn equally fascinating area for nature and traditional culture lovers, with beautiful rivers and mountains, and communities of Red Tai and Shan people who firmly preserve their traditional way of life.
