Indawgyi Myanmar 35/46: Enchanted by Two Sisters, Tai Daeng and Mien Mien San Pinang 2/4
by mr.hotsia
This time, I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to travel to Inndawgyi Lake, a famous lake in Kachin State, Myanmar. This is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia, spanning over 13 kilometers wide and 24 kilometers long. It is located amidst mountains and lush green forests that remain rich and were declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1999, covering an area of more than 780 square kilometers.
This journey was not just about enjoying beautiful natural views, but I aimed to experience the lifestyle of the Tai Daeng and Mien San ethnic groups living around this lake, which is considered the heart of traditional culture in this area.
Inndawgyi Lake: The Path to the Heart of Tai Daeng
Inndawgyi Lake is located in the Mohnyin administrative district of Kachin State, also known to some fromstories of travels in Kachin Statethat I have shared before. Reaching this lake requires considerable effort because the roads are still dusty and narrow in some parts. However, all the fatigue turned into amazement when I saw small lakeside villages where locals still live simply and maintain a deep connection with nature.
I rented a motorcycle from Mohnyin town to ride to various villages around the lake. Along the way, I saw villagers practicing traditional agriculture and fishing, including lake fishing and gathering wild vegetables growing along the shore. The roadside was filled with large trees and flocks of various birds flying around—a rare sight nowadays.
Two Sisters, Tai Daeng and Mien Mien San Pinang
My destination this time was the village of two sisters, Tai Daeng, Mien Mien San, and Pinang, women from the Tai Daeng and Mien San tribes who still firmly preserve their culture, traditions, and language. Talking and spending time with them helped me understand the beauty of a simple yet profound tribal lifestyle.
They told me about their tribe’s history passed down from ancestors, their intricate traditional costumes, and the lively festivals that remain vibrant despite the many changes in the outside world.
One of my favorite activities was trying local dishes they prepared using fresh ingredients from the lake and forest, such as the rare Irrawaddy river fish and homegrown native vegetables. I must admit, the flavors and aromas of those dishes truly reflected the deep relationship between people and nature.
Lifestyle by Inndawgyi Lake
The villages around the lake are not only inhabited by Tai Daeng and Mien San but also by Kachin people living together in this region. Most villagers engage in agriculture and fishing, living in harmony with nature. I saw children playing by the water’s edge in colorful traditional costumes and elders diligently weaving traditional fabrics.
In the morning, I recommend waking early to stroll through the local market near the lake. Here, you will find fresh produce stalls run by villagers selling vegetables, fruits, fish, and dried goods neatly arranged. Bargaining with the locals is full of friendliness and genuine smiles.
Connection with the Irrawaddy River and Kachin State
Inndawgyi Lake is not far from the source of the Irrawaddy River, the main river that has sustained the lives of Myanmar people for thousands of years. It originates from the confluence of the Mali Hka and Mekha rivers in Kachin State. Understanding the relationship between water and local life here made me realize the importance of nature that cannot be easily destroyed. Travel and Accommodation Recommendations
For traveling to Inndawgyi, I, mr.hotsia, recommend preparing for motorcycle riding on dusty and gravel roads. Bring a helmet and a face mask for safety and comfort. Staying overnight in small villages around the lake will allow you to fully experience the authentic lifestyle of the Tai Daeng and Mien San people.
There are also small guesthouses offering boat tours to observe local life and various bird species during January, when many rare birds inhabit the area. If you enjoy birdwatching and nature, Inndawgyi is a destination not to be missed.
Summary of Impressions
Inndawgyi is not just an ordinary lake but a place where nature and the traditional lifestyles of the Tai Daeng and Mien San people are beautifully intertwined. I, mr.hotsia, was impressed by the simplicity and warmth of the people here, who still preserve their cultural roots and balance with nature.
