Indawgyi Myanmar 43/46: Amazed to see a Burmese man sitting still, meditative fishing in the middle of the lake
When talking about one of the largest lakes in Southeast Asia, the nameIndawgyi Lakeimmediately comes to my mind. This freshwater lake is located in Kachin State, Myanmar, where I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to experience the atmosphere firsthand. I must say, everything I saw was very different from what I had imagined.
Indawgyi is a large lake, spanning 13 kilometers from east to west and over 24 kilometers from north to south. Around the lake are more than 20 indigenous villages. This place is not just a large water source but also a wildlife sanctuary with very high biodiversity, especially rare birds that birdwatchers worldwide come to see, including Greylag geese, Oriental darters, and purple swamphens, which I have witnessed on several occasions during my visits.Indawgyi
Atmosphere and lifestyle of villagers by Indawgyi Lake
What made me stop and be most amazed was the image of a Burmese man sitting still on a small boat in the middle of the lake. He wasn’t using a regular fishing rod but seemed deeply meditative with the surrounding nature. His fishing method was simple yet powerful, like meditating in the vast water. I saw him catch a lot of fish during the time he sat there—no rush, no noise, just calmness and patience as the key.
After talking with local villagers, I learned that this fishing style is a traditional method passed down in the Shan and Kachin communities around the lake. It is both a belief and a way of life deeply connected to nature. Most villagers combine farming with fishing in Indawgyi Lake for their livelihood and community exchange.
Traveling to Indawgyi Lake: Why mr.hotsia loves this place
From my experience, traveling to Indawgyi is not easy if you don’t plan ahead. But the difficulty made me excited and allowed me to truly experience the indigenous way of life. I chose to rent a motorcycle to ride along routes in Kachin State, which gave me the freedom to stop at roadside villages and experience the pure nature around the Irrawaddy River, not far from the lake.Kachin Stateis an area that impressed me with its cultural and natural diversity, still raw and remarkably pristine.
Most importantly, I saw a deeper side of Burmese life than I expected—whether it was about living, working, or beliefs related to the surrounding nature. All of this made me feel that traveling to Indawgyi is not just tourism but a true learning and cultural immersion experience.
Tips and things to know before visiting Indawgyi
If you plan to visit Indawgyi Lake, I, mr.hotsia, recommend preparing well for travel and accommodation because this area still lacks luxury hotels or big-city conveniences. Most accommodations are small guesthouses run by locals. Communication might be difficult, but if you want to experience real local life, this is the place.
Don’t forget to bring birdwatching and photography gear because Indawgyi is a paradise for birdwatchers. If you enjoy peaceful activities, try taking a boat to fish like the Burmese man I met—you will surely have a unique experience like never before.
Experience local life and food that’s hard to find elsewhere
After spending the day experiencing nature and lakeside life, don’t forget to try local dishes prepared by villagers. These flavors differ from the Burmese food I’ve had in big cities, such asBagan, Baganor Nyaung U. Here, the food focuses on fresh ingredients from the lake and organically grown vegetables. My favorite dish is herb-fried fish from Indawgyi—fresh and crispy enough to ask for seconds.
Also, talking with villagers around the lake helped me understand their culture and deep connection to nature even more.
Summary of experience and recommendations
Indawgyi is not just an ordinary lake but a gateway to a world of sustainable and peaceful indigenous lifestyles. Seeing the Burmese man meditative fishing in the middle of the lake is an image I will remember for a long time. The calmness and simplicity here make me want to return and invite everyone who loves nature and local culture to experience it themselves.
